Waso, Feehrer, Sandell land NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Elizabethtown College men's soccer landed three players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region teams, led by sophomore forward Gilbert Waso's First Team selection. Junior defender Sam Feehrer and senior goalkeeper Ryan Sandell were each named to the Second Team.

Waso, the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year and All-Landmark First Team pick, had a central role as a hybrid forward/midfielder for the 14-4-2 Blue Jays. A superstar in the making immediately upon stepping onto the field as a freshman, Waso's growth continued with an even better follow-up campaign in 2016.

Waso is more than halfway to becoming the program's 12th all-time 100-point scorer after producing a Landmark-leading 15 goals and 36 points. Waso also ranked second in the league with six assists behind only Feehrer's seven. In 40 career games, Waso has totaled 24 goals and 14 assists for 62 points.

Friday's honor comes as no surprise for Waso. He was a 2015 NSCAA All-America First Team pick and returns to the all-region first team for a second consecutive season.

When Feehrer transferred to Elizabethtown in time for his sophomore season last fall, coach Skip Roderick knew he was getting a highly talented player.

While he manufactured an 11-point season (three goals, five assists) in 2015, the well-rounded Feehrer sat in the defensive shadows behind senior All-American Martin Fevre and four-year starter Jack Rudy.

This year, Feehrer took the baton and led the Blue Jays' defense. Elizabethtown allowed the second fewest goals in the conference (17). The team also ranked second with a 0.81 goals against average and nine shutouts.

Feehrer was routinely involved in E-town's set piece plays and is versatile enough to play forward, midfield and defense, though he makes his primary home in the back. The Reading, Pennsylvania, native's agility and flexibility resulted in a league-high seven assists. Feehrer had one goal on the season, a double overtime game-winner against Goucher Oct. 15.

Sandell, like Feehrer, was named all-region for the first time in his career.

A product of Medford, New Jersey, Sandell patiently awaited his chance to take over in goal behind predecessors Justin Signora and Rodrigo Barrera.

Sandell responded when opportunity presented itself. He went 13-4-2 with 59 saves, a .819 save percentage, 0.74 goals against average and four clean sheets as the Blue Jays returned to the Landmark championship game and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship tournament.

Sandell led the Landmark in goals against average and tied for the league lead in wins. He ranked second in save percentage, fifth in saves and fifth in shutouts while playing a league-high 1583:56. Sandell recorded a five-save shutout as E-town defeated 19th-ranked Vassar in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, Nov. 12, and made a season-high six saves at Messiah, Sept. 28.
