Women's basketball topples Stevenson to extend home win streak

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Emily Martin and Abby Beyer combined for more made field goals than Stevenson did as a team in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 65-44 rout of the Mustangs at Thompson Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays took control of the non-conference affair with a big second quarter and never looked back. E-town also remained unbeaten against Stevenson, 6-0 all-time.

Elizabethtown (7-1) came into the game knowing it would have to slow down three-time Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week Sara Tarbert. Martin took on the defensive duties on Tarbert and helped hold the senior to well below her season average. Tarbert managed 14 points against Martin on 5-for-17 shooting while the two went head-to-head. The Mustangs' leading scorer grabbed two late buckets to boost her final point total to 18, but the Jays defense locked in and frustrated Stevenson's (6-3) offense all game long.

A three-point game after the first quarter, 14-11, E-town broke things wide open in the second in large part to a 17-2 run to end the half. Martin had the first points of the second stanza after reading Imani Sanders' eyes and stepping in front of a pass and taking it the other way for the fast break layup, one of 22 turnovers forced by the Jays. Martin wound up outscoring Stevenson by herself, 12-8.

The Mustangs, down five, got things level on Hannah Crist's lay-in, but from there it was all Elizabethtown. 10 of Martin's 12 points in the second came during the Blue Jays' 17-2 spurt to close out the half. They led 34-19 at the break.

Beyer forced a turnover in the third quarter that led to Emma Hoesman finding Mikayla Ruth for the fast break layup and E-town had its first 20-point lead of the contest. Hoesman's assist was one of her career-high eight. The Jays spent the majority of the second half ahead by 20-plus.

Tarbert knocked down two foul shots early on in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 19, 53-34. Beyer knocked down her next three shots, a jumper that capped off a defensive possession that ended with a Lydia Lawson steal and Hoesman assist, and back-to-back three pointers to send E-town back ahead by 23 at 61-38.

Elizabethtown's efficiency on offense led to a 47 percent shooting night while the defense limited Stevenson to just 33 percent. On the season, the Mustangs were shooting over 40 percent from the field. E-town is now 7-0 when holding teams to less than 51 points and 4-0 on their home floor.

Martin shot better than 50 percent for the fifth time this season and tied her single-game career high with 26 points (11-20 FG) and made all four of her foul shots. She also collected seven boards, four steals, and a block. A day after her shooting struggles, Beyer went for 15, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Lawson pitched in with eight points and season-bests of six assists and five steals. Mikayla Ruth made four of her eight shots for eight points.

The women's basketball team will gear up for a showdown with Muhlenberg at Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 2 p.m.
