Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-half push leads women's basketball past Muhlenberg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team flexed its non-conference muscle for an eighth time this season, coming back to defeat Muhlenberg 57-49. Emily Martin dominated the Mules with 24 points and 23 rebounds to help lead the charge as E-town erased a four-point halftime deficit and turned it into an eight-point victory.

Martin was only 2-for-7 from the floor in the first half, but still ended up with a first-half double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. The senior shot 10-for-12 from the foul line through the first two quarters.

Sara Dilly drained a three with 16 ticks to go in the first quarter as Muhlenberg (7-3) jumped out to a 22-14 lead after one quarter of action. The Mules shot 8-for-15 from the field including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to grab an eight-point edge after one.

The lead was as many as nine on two occasions after made layups by Brandi Vallely, but after the Muhlenberg point guard stared down a pass that Mikayla Ruth read and took the other way for two, the Blue Jays began their comeback. Martin closed out the half scoring the Jays' final five points and the Mules lead 28-24 at the break.

Right off the bat to start the third, Emma Hoesman found Abby Beyer for a three-pointer that brought Elizabethtown (8-1) within a point of taking its first lead of the contest. The game remained a one-possession game over the next few minutes before Chelsea Gary grabbed an offensive board and her put-back layup was good to make it a five-point lead, 36-31 with 6:41 left in the third.

Beyer connected on her second trey of the night with 3:53 left in the third that tied the game at 38-38. Two possessions later, Hoesman sank a jumper from just inside the arc on the right wing to put the Blue Jays in front by a bucket, 40-38, their first lead of the game. From there, Muhlenberg would not retake the lead.

Hoesman, Ruth, and Nikki Thompson all hit crucial shots in the fourth and Martin scored six more and grabbed another seven rebounds.

Muhlenberg, down two possession or six points, 55-49, had the ball with 1:03 to go after Hoesman found Martin for two at the hoop. Beyer made the defensive play and stole the ball away from Christina Manning after alertly called timeout, giving the Jays possession of the basketball with a little over a minute left. On the ensuing possession, Hoesman canned a jumper with seven seconds showing on the shot clock to extend the lead to eight, 57-49.

The Mules missed on their final four attempts from the floor over the final 5:07 of the game and E-town ran out the clock to get the win. The Jays' defense clamped down over the final three quarters, only allowing a total of 27 points after giving up 22 in the first.

Elizabethtown has only allowed three of nine opponents to score more than 50 points and limited Muhlenberg to just 32 rebounds after the Mules came into Saturday's game grabbing just under 50 a game.

Martin's line of 24 points and 23 rebounds is the second time the center has achieved the 20-20 marks in the same game. She had 23 points and 25 boards at home against Drew as a sophomore. It was her fourth career 20-plus rebound game and first since hauling down 21 against Susquehanna on Feb. 20, 2016. It was her seventh double-double of the season and fifth time she has scored more than 20 points this season. Martin also made a career-high 12 foul shots.

The Blue Jays will have almost two weeks off of game action before returning to the court, at home, to face Randolph-Macon on Friday, Dec. 30 at 5 p.m.
