Blue Jays beat Baruch to remain unbeaten

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Points off turnovers and second-chance points played a key role for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team in its 63-50 win over Baruch Sunday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. Emily Martin led all scorers with 24 points and Abby Beyer added 15 as the Blue Jays beat the Bearcats to stay perfect through four games.

Martin and Beyer each had eight points in the opening quarter as Elizabethtown (4-0) rolled through the first ten minutes. The duo outscored Baruch (0-4) on their own, 16-8, and the Jays took a 22-8 lead into the second quarter.

Beyer, who came through with a season-high 15 points and season-best three treys, hit two of her three-pointers in the first. Martin came up with a steal and on the ensuing possession, Julia Craig dished to Beyer, who drilled her first trey from the left wing 40 seconds into the game. Martin had a pair of layups as the Blue Jays were out 9-0 through the first three minutes.

After a quarter where E-town scored 11 points off turnovers to zero for Baruch, the Bearcats clawed their way closer. Jacqueline Kennedy and Daniela Arias utilized the painted area. The two combined for 11 points in the period and outscored the Blue Jays 12-4 in the paint.

Emma Hoesman drew the matchup of guarding Veronica Ganzi, Baruch's leading scorer at just under 24 points per game. Hoesman and the E-town defense limited senior guard to just four points on three shots through the first half and Elizabethtown went into the locker room ahead 37-25.

Ganzi looked to score more in the second half as Baruch made more of an effort to get their scorer the ball. She posted 15 second-half points and finished with a team-high 19. Ganzi had the first five points of the third quarter and within three minutes of play the Bearcats were within two of Elizabethtown, 37-35. E-town started the half 0-for-4 from the field during Baruch's 10-0 run.

Craig connected on a lay-in then blocked a shot at the other end. Beyer then nailed her third three-pointer of the afternoon to extend the Jays' lead to seven, 42-35. E-town turned the tables on Baruch and ended the third on an 11-0 run over the final 6:51.

Ganzi got the visitors back within eight in the fourth with 5:18 remaining the non-conference contest, but they would get no closer. Lydia Lawson would find Martin twice in the period, including an easy basket with 28 seconds left to push the Blue Jays' advantage back up to 14.

Martin ended with her third double-double of the season and second straight. She had 24 points, a season-high, to go along with 14 rebounds. She also had four steals, three assists, and two blocks. Beyer's 15 came in a season-high 34 minutes. Lawson led the Jays with four dimes.

Elizabethtown will begin Landmark Conference play on the road on Saturday, December 3 at Moravian. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
