Blue Jays suffer third straight loss, 63-52, at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Senior guard Matt Lapkowicz had another strong night from beyond the arc and tied a career-high with nine rebounds Tuesday, but Elizabethtown picked the wrong time to go into an offensive funk in a 63-52 loss at Wilkes.

Bryce Greene's two free throws with 11:32 remaining had the Blue Jays within one, 40-39, but E-town managed just six points over the next 8:47, while Wilkes built an insurmountable lead, 58-47 lead.

Lapkowicz, owner of 12 3-point field goals made in Elizabethtown's (1-3) first three games, came into the game against the Colonels ranked 20th in Division III.

Already connecting at better than 54% from deep, the Harrisburg native canned 4-of-6 on his way to a team-high 16 points. Lapkowicz made all three of his second-half attempts and finished one rebound short of his first career double-double.

Jake Sweger provided the Blue Jays with 10 points, Greene nine and Josh Eden eight.

Both teams shot 40-percent for the game, but a 41-29 rebounding advantage for the Colonels that featured 13 offensive boards allowed the hosts to hoist up seven more shots.

Wilkes also had a distinct edge at the foul line, going 12-of-16 (75%), while the Jays made just 8-of-14.

A Lapkowicz triple started Elizabethtown on a 14-4 run that bumped the visitors into the lead for the first time, 21-20, on Sweger's layup with 2:29 left in the first half. Eden, Greene, Peter Harding and Jamil Pines-Elliott joined Lapkowicz in contributing points to the run.

The Colonels (3-1) were able to move back in front, 25-22, at the half, and scored seven of the first 10 points in the second half to extend their lead.

Down 38-30, E-town made another push. Lapkowicz hit a three and Greene scored six straight points to pull the Jays within 39-38 before the well went dry.

Over the course of the next 8:47, the Blue Jays went just 3-of-12 and committed four giveaways. Wilkes took advantage of the opportunity, running its lead to 13 with under three minutes to go.

Wilkes' lead reached 16, 63-47, before Elizabethtown rattled off the final five points of the night.

Sweger was 5-of-9 shooting and Eden 4-of-8, but the big men were held to six rebounds between them.

The Blue Jays won't play again until Wednesday, Nov. 30, at home against Haverford. Game time is 7 p.m.
