E-town suffers pair of close defeats at Lycoming Quad

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Luke Fernandez, Bryan Pflanz and Philip Torresani went unbeaten Sunday, but the Elizabethtown wrestling team dropped competitive matches to Washington & Jefferson, 32-23, and Lycoming, 31-18, in the Lycoming Quad.

The Blue Jays were awarded a 54-0 forfeit victory over Penn College, which pulled out days before the quad due to not being able to field a lineup.

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 32, ELIZABETHTOWN 23

Elizabethtown jumped out to a 17-11 lead at the halfway point, but the Presidents stormed back with 18 straight points between 165-184 pounds to capture the opening match of the quad.

Torresani and D3wrestle.com contender Pflanz scored a forfeit and pin at 125 and 133, respectively, to put the Blue Jays up 12-0 right off the bat. Washington & Jefferson came back with 11 points in the next two bouts before Chris Kummerer stemmed the tide with a 16-0 technical fall over Evan Brown at 157 for a 17-11 advantage.

Pins from Alex Miller at 165 and nationally-ranked No. 3/4 Sonnieboy Blanco at 184 were sandwiched around a forfeit win by W&J at 174. The bonus points pushed the Presidents out in front 29-17 and though Fernandez would earn his second pin of the season in 1:36 over William Oberschelp to bring E-town within 29-23, the Jays fate was sealed when Nicholas Kumburis took a 4-2 decision over Eric Eckstein at 285.
