Penn State Mont Alto holds off Blue Jays 76-70

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Elizabethtown outscored Penn State Mont Alto 45-41 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit. The Blue Jays dropped the consolation game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Sunday, 76-70.

Three players scored in double figures for the Jays (1-2), led by Matt Lapkowicz, who had 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting and 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

Josh Eden registered 15 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Bryce Green went for a career-high 12.

Penn State Mont Alto opened the game on a 10-3 run, though the Blue Jays evened the score at 19 on a Lapkowicz three with 7:40 left in the half.

Trailing 27-24 following a Greene 3-pointer, Elizabethtown was held to just one point over the final 4:35 of the first and went to the break down 35-25.

E-town trimmed a 13-point Lions (2-3) lead to two with 10:11 to go, but Mont Alto immediately answered with 10 in a row to push the lead back to 58-47.

It took the Jays the better part of the remaining 10 minutes to draw close again, but they were once again trailing by just two when Jamil Pines-Elliott connected from long range to make it 68-66 at the 1:14 mark.

Elizabethtown never got a chance to go in front, however.

Jalen Smith made a layup on the Lions' next possession, Cody Rydbom converted a 3-point play and Mont Alto hit its last four free throws to put the game away.

Smith and center Jerome Smith impacted the game in a major way for Mont Alto, combining for 45 points. Smith scored a game-high 26 points, while Evans posted a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Terrell Campbell had six assists.

The Blue Jays shot 32.4% (23-of-71) and made 11 threes in the contest. Lapkowicz had four of those and Greene three.

Jamil Pines-Elliott finished with nine points, Peter Harding eight and Ethan DuBois seven and a game-high seven assists for the Blue and Gray.

Elizabethtown tries to snap its two-game slide Tuesday at Wilkes. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
