Wesley drops men's basketball on late basket

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Elizabethtown rallied from a 10-point first-half deficit and led by as many as six in the second half, but Evan Anderson put back his own miss with 1.2 seconds to go as Wesley topped the Blue Jays 72-70 in the opening round of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday evening.

Sophomore forward Matt Thomas scored all of his career-high nine points and senior guard Matt Lapkowicz eight of his team-high 20 in the second half to give E-town (1-1) a shot down the stretch.

Lapkowicz's pull up jumper amongst the trees with 1:43 left gave the Blue Jays a 68-66 lead, but Rasahn Brinkley answered with a tip-in to tie it 23 seconds later and the Wolverines (1-1) went back in front, 70-68, on a JW Lawson layup with 57 seconds left.

Elizabethtown drew even once more, this time at 70, as freshman Ethan DuBois, playing in just his second career game, calmly sank a pair of free throws with 32 seconds to go.

It was DuBois' defense that nearly carried the Jays to overtime. He stayed right with Anderson on the final possession, forcing the Wesley guard into a tough left-handed running layup.

Anderson missed, but DuBois' momentum challenging the shot carried him away from Anderson. Anderson was able to catch the ball coming off the rim in midair and score the winning basket on the rebound.

Seeking their first 2-0 start since 2010-11, the Blue Jays got 12 points from Lapkowicz on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point land in the first half.

Even though E-town trailed by double-digits, it was able to cut away at Wesley's lead, eventually getting to within 39-37 at the half following a pair of Brian Lukacsy freebies in the final 10 seconds.

Lapkowicz scored six of the Jays' first eight points out of the locker room and Thomas gave them their first lead of the game, 47-46, with 14:50 to play.

Thomas scored seven straight points in crunch time, twice giving Elizabethtown the lead in the final five minutes.

Lapkowicz was joined in double figures by Josh Eden, who totaled 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting. DuBois had seven and four assists as the Blue Jays shot 44.6% (25-of-56) and 77.8% (14-of-18) from the charity stripe.

Wesley put four of its five starters in double figures, led by Lawson's game-high 25 points. In all, 67 of the Wolverines 72 points came from its starting five. Brinkley finished with 19, Anderson 13 and Paul Clemons a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds.

The Wolverines always seemed capable of getting a big bucket. They shot 54% (27-of-50) for the night and better than 50% in each half.

Elizabethtown will face Penn State Mont Alto, which fell to host Lebanon Valley 85-70, in the consolation game Sunday at 1 p.m.
