Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Martin, Blue Jays soar above LVC for season-opening win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Double-double and Emily Martin have become all but synonymous for the senior center. She played a major role in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 63-51 season-opening win over Lebanon Valley at Thompson Gymnasium Wednesday evening. Martin led all players in both points and rebounds in the game.

Martin was relatively quiet for Elizabethtown (1-0) in the first half, hitting only one shot from the floor, but converting five of six foul shots for seven first-half points.

Lebanon Valley (0-1) and E-town traded off the lead through the first six minutes of the first quarter until Abby Beyer knocked down two free throws of her own and Julia Craig added another foul shot for a 12-9 lead by the end of quarter.

The second and third quarters made the difference for the Blue Jays, who outscored the Dutchmen 38-19.

Jennifer Eck drilled a jumper to cut the lead to one point, but from there, Elizabethtown surged ahead. A 9-0 run covering a little over three minutes pushed E-town in front 20-11, its largest lead at the time.

LVC got back within four after Anne Lehr's and-one was good. On the Jays ensuing possession, Lydia Lawson grabbed an offensive rebound, took the ball out top and pulled up for a three and drained it.

Martin hit two foul shots and Mikayla Ruth split a pair to make the lead 11, 27-16, with 1:13 to go in the half. Lehr drilled a trey with 24 seconds left when Lebanon Valley really needed a big shot.

E-town would get the last shot of the opening half and Beyer dropped in a three from the left corner on an assist from Craig with just four ticks left on the clock. The Jays were up 30-19 at the half.

Martin took control of things in the third quarter, scoring 11 of her game-high 22 points. In the first 3:42 of the third period, Martin had already collected six points, two boards, and two blocks. She had Elizabethtown's first three baskets of the second half.

The Dutchmen struggled from the floor as E-town got ahead by as many as 25. Martin ended up outscoring LVC herself in the quarter, 11-9. In total, the Blue Jays put up 20 points to the Dutchmen's nine.

LVC brought on its full court press that gave E-town some fits, but the hole was far too deep to get out of, even though Lebanon Valley got the better of Elizabethtown in the scoring department in the fourth quarter, 23-13.

Martin shot a perfect 6-for-6 in the second half and finished an efficient 7-for-10 from the floor and 8-for-12 from the foul line. She collected 15 rebounds and blocked four shots. Beyer added 12 points while Emma Hoesman had eight.

The women's basketball team will participate in the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament this coming weekend hosted by Franklin & Marshall. They will play the host Diplomats on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m.
