Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beyer, Blue Jays dominate Diplomats in tournament opener

LANCASTER, Pa. -- From the get-go, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team took it to host Franklin & Marshall in the opener of the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament Saturday at the Mayser Center. The Blue Jays moved to 2-0 with a 73-46 win over the Diplomats to advance to the tournament championship.

Elizabethtown (2-0) never trailed in the game and were out 7-2 right away. Emily Martin and Marissa Emlet hit consecutive layups and then Abby Beyer drained her first of two three-pointers in the game to put E-town up by five with 7:36 to go in the first.

Sarah Pisani responded with a three of her own to cut the lead to two, but from there, it was all Blue Jays. F&M wouldn't get any closer as Elizabethtown surged out to a double-digit lead.

A 12-0 run capped off by Martin's fastbreak layup off Emlet's steal made it 19-5 with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter of play. The Blue Jays made 10 of 15 fields while holding Franklin & Marshall to just 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) to take a commanding 25-8 lead after ten minutes.

E-town's bench took over the scoring production in the second quarter and maintained the same defensive tenacity. Lydia Lawson missed a jumper and Lindsey Powers grabbed the rebound for the Diplomats. Lawson would reclaim the ball from Powers, forcing the turnover, and connected on a fastbreak layup. It was one of Lawson's team-high two steals.

Julia Craig, one of three players for Elizabethtown in double figures by game's end, put in four of her 12 points in the second quarter. Craig was aggressive on the offensive end and made six of her seven foul shot attempts on the night.

Rachel Liszkiewicz and Nikki Thompson also added points off the bench as E-town's reserves outscored F&M in the second quarter themselves, 10-9. The Jays held the Diplomats below ten points for the second straight quarter and went into halftime ahead 41-17.

Craig and Liszkiewicz led the Blue Jays in the third quarter with a combined nine points, including 5-for-7 from the foul line between the two players.

The Elizabethtown defense continued to do a masterful job at frustrating the Diplomats' offense. F&M's best shooting quarter came in the third, but that was just 4-for-18 (22.2 percent) from the field. The hosts were held to below 20 percent for the game (19.1 percent).

Martin dropped in five of her game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter. She finished with eight rebounds and four blocks. Beyer added 13 points and seven boards as the catalyst that got the game going for the Blue Jays from the start. Craig added 12 and 6.

Thompson led all rebounders with a game-high nine as Elizabethtown hit the boards, outrebounding Franklin & Marshall 58-33. Five Blue Jays had at least five rebounds in the game. 11 of 12 players recorded at least two points for E-town.

Elizabethtown will face Lycoming in Sunday's championship. The Warriors won their game against King's (Pa.) to advance to face the Blue Jays at 3 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
