McLamb double leads field hockey past Wilkes

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Allison McLamb recorded the first and last goal for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team in a 3-2 win over Wilkes Wednesday afternoon at Wolf Field. McLamb's second of the game in the second half proved to be the game-winner as the Blue Jays held on for the close non-conference victory.

It was all Elizabethtown (6-4) in the first half as the Jays did not allow Wilkes (8-4) a single shot through 35 minutes.

McLamb got her first of the game 14:31 into the first half after Kelsey Detweiler broke through the defense down the right side and slid a pass directly across the front of the goal. McLamb met the ball with her stick and slammed it into the cage to give E-town a 1-0 lead.

Nearing nine minutes left in the opening half of play, Madison Kubik ushered a pass from just outside the top of the shooting circle to Megan Eppley. Eppley sent a shot toward goal that beat Colonel's goalie Dallas Kendra to the lower left to double the Jays' lead to 2-0.

Taylor Ryan got in on goal for Wilkes 15 seconds into the second half and forced Margo Donlin into an early save. Donlin took over for Mack at halftime.

It would be the only chance for the visitors for nearly 20 minutes as Elizabethtown then peppered Kendra with shots, but the goalie stood tall and did not allow the Jays to score.

Gianna Gennetts lifted a shot from the left side that found the opposite side of the cage to halve the E-town lead down to 2-1 with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Ten minutes later, McLamb gave E-town the insurance goal it was looking for. Charity Good had her scoring opportunity stopped, but McLamb was there to collect the rebound and find the back of the cage for her second of the game and third of the season.

It would prove to be a big goal as Wilkes' Marissa Surdy registered her team-leading ninth goal with 20 seconds left in the game to make it 3-2. It was too little, too late for the Colonels as time ran out on any further rally attempt.

Elizabethtown will host Catholic in a battle of unbeatens atop the league standings in a Landmark Conference showdown Saturday, October 8 at 1 p.m.
