Blue Jays swept by Marauders

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Millersville took a late lead in the first set and never looked back Tuesday evening, dropping the Elizabethtown volleyball team, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) in a non-conference match at Thompson Gymnasium.

The Blue Jays got 13 kills from Sarah Schneider, 22 Brooke Daugherty assists and seven kills and nine digs from Anna Simpson, but simply could not keep pace with their NCAA Division II foes from just down the road.

Millersville's (8-12) attack was efficient all evening, clicking at a .379 (15 kills-4 errors-29 attempts) rate in the first set, .355 in the third (16-5-31) and .330 for the match (46-15-94).

The Marauders, led by Haley Butler's 17 kills and 13 from Erin Harman, out-killed the Jays (6-17) 46-28.

Tuesday's first set swapped hands three times and the teams remained within a point or two of each other until late in the set when a kill from Butler, ace from Katie Laughman and block by Kelsi Ceriani helped spearhead a 5-0 Marauder run that broke a 15-all tie.

Butler would continue to pound the ball, recording four more kills before the set was through as MU finished the opener on a 10-1 run to win it 25-16.

Butler and Harman were a handful for the Blue Jays throughout the match. They tied for the team lead with five kills in the second set when Millersville pounced early for an 8-1 lead. E-town made a late charge with a 5-0 run of its own to trim the Marauder lead to 24-20 before Ceriani's kill ended the set.

Elizabethtown used consecutive aces from Anna Simpson and a Schneider kill to grab a 5-1 lead in the third, but the Marauders slowly worked back into the set, taking the lead for good with an 8-1 run that gave them a 17-12 lead.

Simpson totaled three aces and two blocks for the Blue and Gray, while Mackenzie Garner had six kills and a pair of blocks.

Grace Dawson assisted on 39-of-46 Millersville kills, with the libero, Laughman, tallying a match-high 12 digs.

Elizabethtown, which dropped its fourth straight in the series with Millersville since 2011, heads to Pittsburgh Friday and Saturday for the Carnegie Mellon Mini Invitational. The Jays will face Messiah (6 p.m.) and RIT (8 p.m.) Friday evening.
