Volleyball defeated by Messiah, RIT

PITTSBURGH -- Elizabethtown opened weekend play at the Carnegie Mellon Mini Invitational with 3-0 losses to Messiah and Rochester Institute of Technology Friday.

Sarah Schneider led the Blue Jays (6-19) with nine kills and 11 digs in their match against Messiah (21-4), but the Falcons committed just three attacking errors over the first two sets on their way to the sweep: 25-9, 25-14, 25-21.

Sophomore middle hitter Mackenzie Garner chipped in six kills and three blocks, and Anna Simpson had six kills and an ace.

Gabby Anders handed out 22 assists and Chelsea Gallagher joined Schneider in double figures with 11 digs.

RIT also got on E-town early winning the first two sets by 10 points or more. The Tigers, led by Sarah Szybist's 19 kills totaled 51 in the match on just 97 attempts (.381).

The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were limited to just 25 kills, with nearly half (12) coming in a 26-24 third set defeat.

RIT won the opening set 25-13 and pulled away for a 25-15 win in the second.

Garner topped the Jays in kills with nine against RIT (20-12). Simpson had eight and Schneider five.

Brooke Ricks reached double digits in digs for the second time in her young career, finishing with 10. Anders, who compiled a team-high 18 assists, moved within six of 600 for the season.

Elizabethtown continues play at Carnegie Mellon Saturday with matches against the host Tartans and Case Western Reserve.
