Feehrer, Waso claim Landmark weekly awards

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Junior Sam Feehrer and sophomore Gilbert Waso have played significant roles during Elizabethtown's current five-game winning streak. Monday afternoon, the duo swiped the Landmark Conference's weekly men's soccer awards, with Feehrer claimed Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career and Waso picking up Offensive Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.

Feehrer, a Reading, Pennsylvania, native, scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute to lift E-town to a 1-0 double overtime victory over Goucher on Homecoming, Saturday.

The goal was Feehrer's first of the season and moved the Blue Jays into sole possession of first place in the Landmark standings at 4-0-1 (13 pts.)

Feehrer took a pass from Waso just outside the center of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot to the upper left corner setting off a wild celebration from the Jays. Earlier in the week, the junior defender assisted on a Waso goal in the 3rd minute of E-town's 7-3 win at Penn State Berks.

Feehrer's six assists this season are tied for the team and conference lead, and he currently stands as the top scoring defender in the Landmark with eight points. Feehrer has amassed all of his points in the Jays' last five games, scoring at least one in each. He started his current hot streak with back-to-back two-assist games Oct. 1, at Scranton, and Oct. 5, at Moravian.

Waso, the reigning Landmark Offensive Athlete of the Week, remained red-hot this week, extending his point streak to four games with six points (two goals, two assists) in wins over Penn State Berks and Goucher.

Waso did all of his damage in E-town's 7-3 win at Penn State Berks Wednesday in the opening 10 minutes. He assisted on Jeff Light's goal 29 seconds into the game, before scoring in the 3rd and 10th minutes as the Blue Jays raced to a 4-0 lead at the 9:16 mark.

The sophomore forward's goal in the 10th minute went in the books as the game-winner, surprisingly the first of the year for the conference leader in goals (11) and points (26).

In Saturday's win over Goucher, Waso set up Feehrer's game-winning goal in double overtime.

Including his six points this past week, Waso now has 15 (six goals, three assists) in his last four games. He scored two goals in three straight games from Oct. 5-12. Monday's award was Waso's second straight and third of the season.

Elizabethtown (10-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 Landmark) plays at Lancaster Bible, Wednesday, in its final regular season non-conference game.
