Simpson sets career-high in kills in loss to Moravian

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown volleyball dropped its Landmark finale to Moravian Friday evening, 3-1, despite the best efforts of sophomore Anna Simpson, who finished with a career-high 14 kills and nine digs.

Simpson moved from her usual spot at middle hitter to outside with Elle Shatto unavailable. The Dover, Del., native responded right from the opening serve, amassing four kills in the first.

Though Moravian (13-11, 2-4 Landmark) took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-14, Simpson came on strong in the third with six more kills on seven attempts to help E-town (6-16, 0-6) remain in the match with a 25-19 decision.

The Greyhounds closed Elizabethtown out in the fourth, however, 25-12, getting four kills apiece from Brooke Kusmider and Mary Zacher.

Friday night's match marked the first time Simpson has reached the 10-kill mark in her career and she nearly came up with a double-double. Simpson was also credited with two block assists.

Mackenzie Garner and Sarah Schneider finished with nine kills each, and Emily Sexton six. Chelsea Gallagher set for the Jays for the first time this year and collected 37 assists.

Trying to breakthrough with its first conference win of the year, E-town had Moravian in a vulnerable spot after scoring 10 consecutive points to turn a 14-8 deficit into an 18-14 lead.

In crunch time, Kusmider delivered for Moravian with a kill and an ace to put the visitors ahead 24-22. Taylor Kornmann (eight kills) finished the set with a kill.

Junior middle hitter Morgan Reiss served up five aces against the Hounds. Reiss also had five digs and a block. Garner finished with three blocks.

Elizabethtown will face Division II Millersville University back at Thompson Gymnasium this coming Tuesday at 7 p.m.
