Scranton slows Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown led by as many as six points in the opening set of Friday's Landmark Conference match with Scranton, but the Royals rallied to take the set and change the complexion of the match in a 3-0 sweep of the Blue Jays at Thompson Gymnasium.

Landmark kills leader Kristin Kirwan stepped up when her team needed it most, providing a team-high six to go with five digs in the 25-23 opening set win. Scranton controlled sets two and three, winning them 25-18 and 25-17.

Kirwan was right on her average of 4.0 kills/set, finishing with 12 and 11 digs for a double-double. Setter Brittany Cafiero also manufactured a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs.

Elizabethtown was eliminated from Landmark Championships consideration with the loss. The Blue Jays (6-15, 0-5 Landmark) needed wins over the Royals and Moravian (8 p.m.), along with Goucher losses to Susquehanna and Juniata Saturday to take the No. 4 seed.

The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Blue and Gray.

Sarah Schneider's 11 kills and 14 digs led the way for the hosts. Schneider put forth five kills in the third set to collect her second straight double-double and fifth of the year.

Elle Shatto had six kills, Mackenzie Garner and Anna Simpson had five. Garner, who came in to the match hitting a conference-best .385, was targeted by the Royals (14-13, 2-3), who held her to five kills and six errors on 20 attempts (-.050).

Elizabethtown concludes conference play against Moravian later this evening at 8 p.m.
