Beachley plays hero in E-town's OT win over Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Olivia Beachley couldn't have picked a better moment to score her first career goal for the Elizabethtown College field hockey team. Beachley played the role of hero for the Blue Jays, scoring a matter of minutes into Saturday's 2-1 overtime victory over Scranton at Wolf Field.

Scranton (4-6, 1-1 Landmark) was on the prowl early, earning a penalty corner 1:13 into the contest. Ryan Jones fired a shot off Meredith Campbell's insert, but Margo Donlin made a kick save and sent the ball away from E-town's cage.

Around the 18-minute mark, Elizabethtown (5-4, 2-0 Landmark) looked primed to grab the first goal, but Royals' goalie Claire McAllister made two saves during a shooting spree for the Jays. Charity Good sent one on goal to be stopped by McAllister and Addie Stang redirected Nicole Leaf's shot from out top on goal, only to have it turned away.

The Jays racked up the penalty corners, but were unable to produce a goal off them directly. Though, after what started as a corner, E-town would be awarded a stroke at 32:22. Emma Christman took to the spot and wristed a shot into the upper right of the cage for her sixth of the season to give Elizabethtown a 1-0 lead.

Donlin made one final save before half and was relieved by Hannah Mack to start the second.

Elizabethtown controlled much of the second half, but couldn't double the lead as McAllister made several more saves to keep it a 1-0 game.

The clock ticked under a minute and the Royals' urgency level was indeed high. Scranton had two penalty corners and on the second, the game clock ran out, but the game continued until the corner was played out.

The ball would end up in the middle of a scrum in front of the Blue Jay cage and Amanda Maresca snuck it home to force overtime on the final play of regulation.

E-town willed its way to win the game, earning their 16th a final penalty corner of the game. On the ensuing play, Christman got the ball to Beachley and the freshman got her shot past McAllister for the game-winning goal to lift the Jays to a 2-1 victory.

The Blue Jays outshot Scranton 12-6 and had a plus-ten advantage in corners, 16-6. Donlin started the overtime period and was credited with the win. The E-town duo combined for four saves in the win.

The field hockey team will be at home for a second straight game on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when Wilkes visits Wolf Field. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
