Greyhounds pull away late to down Blue Jays

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team tried to put a blemish in Moravian's Landmark Conference record for the first time this season, but the Greyhounds pulled away late in the game to ensure their unbeaten league record remained intact. Rachel Forjan paced the Blue Jays with 22 points in the 75-65 loss.

Moravian (12-2, 5-0 Landmark) started off hot from the field, hitting on five of its first six shots to get out to an 8-0 lead. Emily Martin's driving left-handed layup were the first points of the game for Elizabethtown (7-5, 3-3 Landmark).

Down 12-2, the Blue Jays put together an 11-0 run to take the lead for the first time. Rachel Forjan drained her first of four three's in the game to kick-start the run. After a missed Moravian three-pointer, Abby Beyer connected on a runner in the lane at the other end. Martin had another driving lay-in, Forjan buried a jumper to finish off an Alyssa Aichele steal on the Greyhounds' end, and Beyer capped off the spurt by pump faking and letting her defender go by and pulling up for a mid-range jumper along the baseline.

The Greyhounds responded with a run of their own to finish the first quarter and led 23-16 after one.

Moravian moved ahead by as many as ten with 2:58, 34-24, but E-town closed the second quarter with the final five points to go into halftime down 34-29. Beyer dropped in a trey and Forjan hit a floater along the right baseline with three seconds to go. The senior guard had ten first-half points for EC.

Elizabethtown continued to trail in the third quarter, and every time they would bring it back within a two-possession score, Moravian would have a response. Despite the deficit, the Jays continued to scrap and battle to get back into the game. Down eight with 1:36 left in the third, a pair of threes from Aichele and Marissa Gingrich and two foul shots by Rachel Liskiewicz had the game knotted up at 52-52 with 34 seconds left. Gingrich's three-pointer tied the game. Alexis Wright, who had 17 points and 14 boards for Moravian, put the hosts up by a bucket with a layup with 13 seconds showing on the clock.

Back-to-back shots from beyond the arc by Gingrich and Forjan had E-town up by four in the early stages of the final quarter. Gingrich was left unguarded at the top of the key and Forjan ran off a screen out top to bury hers.

In a game of runs, Moravian came up with the pivotal one of the game, jumping back ahead 65-60 after using an 11-2 run.

With around two minutes remaining in regulation, Morgan Calabrese nailed a dagger of a three as the Blue Jays were within three before Calabrese made it seven. E-town was unable to make up the deficit and fell 75-65 in the end.

Forjan had a game-high 22 points, while Martin had 11 points and nine rebounds. Gingrich added ten points.

The women's basketball team hits the court again on Wednesday, January 13 to take on Drew at 7 p.m.
