Martin, Aichele power E-town over Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — A pair of Lancaster Catholic graduates led the way for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Thursday night at Juniata. Emily Martin and Alyssa Aichele posted double-doubles for the second straight game and helped the Blue Jays sweep the season series with the Eagles after a 57-45 Landmark Conference victory.

Elizabethtown (7-4, 3-2 Landmark) was off and running, connecting on its first two three-pointers of the game and jumping out to an 8-2 lead over Juniata (5-8, 1-4 Landmark) in the first minute and a half of the first quarter.

A layup from Rachael Anstine tied the game up for the first time at 9-9, but the Eagles wouldn't acquire the lead once during the game. Aichele hit her second three of the quarter with 1:07 remaining to send E-town ahead by four. Two foul shots from Katy Leamer brought Juniata within a bucket by the end of the quarter.

Sarah Sherman knotted the contest up for a second time with 6:18 left in the first half, but Aichele broke the deadlock on a made jumper and Elizabethtown would lead the rest of the way. 10 of Aichele's 14 points came in the first half.

After Aichele took it to Juniata in the first half, Martin stepped it up over the final two quarters and punished the Eagles with ten points and seven boards over the final 20 minutes. She finished with a team-high 15 points and added ten rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season (and third in a row).

Elizabethtown led by nine after the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 13-7 in the third period of play.

Martin assisted on Forjan's three to open the scoring in the fourth and give E-town its first double-digit lead of the game at 44-32. Moments later, Martin finished off an and-one with the made free throw. She hauled down a missed three on Juniata's next possession and then dropped in a layup off a dish from Emma Hoesman. Four of her seven second-half rebounds came in the final quarter.

The Blue Jay defense allowed Juniata to shoot just 21 percent in the second half (7-for-33) while shooting 38 percent on the offensive end. The Eagles were just 4-of-16 from downtown.

Marissa Gingrich was also in double figures with ten points. Forjan and Abby Beyer had seven apiece.

The women's basketball team will head to Bethlehem to face off with Moravian on Saturday, January 9 at 4 p.m.
