Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Juniata soars past Blue Jays with strong second half

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Juniata shot over 50 percent in the second half and pulled away in the latter stages of its 60-46 win over the Elizabethtown College men's basketball team Thursday night in a Landmark Conference matchup at Thompson Gymnasium. Jamil Pines-Elliott and Peter Harding both had nine points apiece to lead the Jays.

The game went back and forth for a large part of the first half. Juniata (11-2, 4-1 Landmark) held the lead through the first seven minutes and change with a few ties thrown in. Dylan Krieger gave Elizabethtown (2-11, 0-5 Landmark) its first lead of the ball game with 12:19 to go in the first half after getting it done on both ends of the floor. The freshman blocked a layup by Colton Moyer and grabbed the defensive board. On the other end, Krieger grabbed the rebound off his own miss and put it back up and in to give the Blue Jays an 8-6 lead.

Both teams shot around 30 percent over the first 20 minutes and neither side led by more than three until the very end of the half. Matt Ziegler's free throw pushed the Jays ahead by 4 with 2:39 to go. After Kyle Koehler got the Eagles within a bucket, Matt Lane made it four once again on E-town's following possession. Juniata ran the ball up the floor as time wound down and Seth Brewer converted a layup with five seconds left, but that was still enough time for Pines-Elliott to take the inbounds pass up the floor and across half court. His three-point attempt at the buzzer banked in from between half court and the arc to give Elizabethtown a 25-20 lead at the break.

The battle of the birds waged on in the second half. The game was tied for the 11th time on the night with less than ten minutes remaining. A pair of free throws from Damon Rickens gave the Eagles the lead back, but it quickly vanished after Ziegler canned a jumper off Krieger's assist. E-town led 40-39 at that point.

A pivotal play in the game came after a Juniata timeout after Ziegler's made bucket. The shot clock was near zero and at the buzzer, Koehler released a three-pointer that swished through and put the visitors back ahead for good. Justin Fleming made it back-to-back treys for the Eagles on the next possession and gave JC their biggest lead of the game to that point.

Pines-Elliott hit a jumper at 5:38 but from there Elizabethtown would be held scoreless for nearly five minutes until Krieger's made jumper from the elbow with 27 ticks left. Juniata had its lead built up to 16 by then and went on to the 60-46 victory.

The Eagles shot 13-for-25 (52 percent) in the second half compared to 31 percent (10-for-32) for E-town. Three Eagles were in double figures. Josh Eden added eight points for the Blue Jays.

The men's basketball team will travel to face Moravian on Saturday, January 9 at 2 p.m.
