Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Second-half rally falls short for women's basketball

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — A third-quarter run got the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team back into its Landmark Conference matchup with visiting Catholic Tuesday night at Thompson Gymnasium after a slow start in the opening half. E-town outscored Catholic in the second half by ten, but the Cardinals were able to hold off the comeback and escape with a 63-60 win.

Elizabethtown (6-4, 2-2 Landmark) was in a 17-10 hole after the first quarter. Catholic punished the Jays by converting turnovers into points. By the end of the first half, the Cardinals had 20 points off Blue Jay turnovers.

The sluggish start in the shooting department wasn't helping the cause for E-town, either. Rachel Forjan sank a three to give EC the lead at 7-6 with 6:45 left in the first, but a 6-0 spurt from Catholic (8-5, 3-1 Landmark) had the visitors back in front 12-6 with 2:27 to go in the quarter.

After missing six of their first seven shots of the second quarter, Elizabethtown was staring at a double-digit deficit as Catholic started pulling away. An and-one from forward Josephine Migash put the Cardinals up 15, their largest of the game at that point, with 5:23 remaining in the first half.

A good jumper from Marissa Gingrich, one of four Jays in double figures on the night, had E-town back within single digits with a minute and a half left, but CUA scored the final two baskets of the second quarter to take a 37-24 lead into the break.

Elizabethtown came out of the locker room on the attack to start the third quarter, scoring the first seven points. Emily Martin forced a turnover, one of her game-high seven steals, and on the other end, Abby Beyer drained a trey on an assist from Alyssa Aichele.

Aichele rebounded a missed layup on Catholic's ensuing possession, pushed the ball up the floor, and found Beyer again for the jumper to cut the Cardinals' lead to eight. Aichele then made it a 7-0 run after grabbing an offensive board and going right back up for the layup.

The Blue Jays' defense began to bother the Catholic shooters. Catholic, who had shot just over 44 percent in the first half, were held to 29 percent in the final two quarters. Meanwhile, E-town got hotter as the game went on, elevating its 27-percent performance in the first half to over 40 percent in the second.

EC also began pushing the ball up the floor and not allowing the Cardinal defense to get set, which result in better looks for Beyer and Gingrich. Beyer finished with a team-high 14 points while Gingrich added 13.

By the start of the fourth, E-town was within three. Catholic went back to what it had been doing in the first half, which was dominating the paint. CUA's first four buckets of the final quarter were from inside the paint. In total, Catholic outscored the Jays 38-14 down low. The lead stretched back up to as many as seven, but Elizabethtown kept it close.

Over a 2:05 stretch in the latter portions of the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays held Catholic scoreless and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead with 2:21 left to go on a made jumper by Gingrich.

Jayni Webster hit two big three-pointers for the Cardinals in the final two minutes of play to keep Catholic in front.

E-town was down two with less than ten seconds to go and had fouls to give. Unfortunately for the Jays, there just wasn't enough time to get Catholic into the bonus and have a chance to get back down to the other end for a chance to tie or win the game. Webster split a pair with 1.7 seconds on the clock, her second clanging off the rim and popping into the air as time expired.

Aichele and Martin both recorded double-doubles for Elizabethtown, with Aichele finishing with ten points and ten rebounds. Martin ended with 12 points and 11 boards. Aichele also contributed a game-high eight assists.

The women's basketball team will wrap up its season series with Juniata on Thursday, Juniata 7 in Huntingdon, Pa. at 7 p.m.
