Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 5 Scranton too much for Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team attempted to do what 18 other teams could not against nationally-ranked No. 5 Scranton; win. The Royals dominated in the paint and went on to a 78-59 win over the Blue Jays Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium to remain unbeaten on the season.

Elizabethtown (10-6, 6-4 Landmark) went toe-to-toe with the conference's top team through the first quarter. Meredith Holley, in her second start of the season, helped the Jays get out front on the first possession. Holley grabbed one of her six rebounds, which tied for a team-high, off Alexix Roman's missed layup and assisted on Alyssa Aichele's layup on the offensive end to start the scoring.

E-town was out 4-0 after Emily Martin converted a layup down low off a feed from Abby Beyer.

It was clear Scranton (19-0, 10-0 Landmark) was going to establish its low-post presence in Roman and went to the junior forward early and often. She had the first six points of the quarter for the Royals.

Marissa Gingrich hit a jumper along the baseline to tie the game at 10-10, the fourth tie of the first quarter, but from there Elizabethtown wouldn't be able to overcome Scranton to get the lead back.

Rachel Forjan dropped in two of her team-high 20 points to knot the game up at 17-17 with 6:03 left in the second quarter, but the Royals would end the first half on an 11-2 run to take a nine point lead into halftime.

Roman took over the second half for Scranton, scoring 16 of her game-high 29 points. The reigning Athlete of the Week finished 14-for-20 from the floor. Her frontcourt partner, Sarah Payonk, ended with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, and missed a triple-double by two assists.

E-town fought back in the second half and got the deficit into single digits on multiple occasions, but the Royals had an answer each time to drive their advantage back into double figures.

Aichele and Martin both recorded 13 points each for the Blue Jays.

The women's basketball team will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday February 3 to take on Catholic at 7 p.m.
