Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 16 Scranton remains unbeaten with win over women's basketball

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team was put to the test right away to start 2016 with a road game at nationally-ranked Scranton Saturday afternoon. Elizabethtown hung tough, but the Royals remained unbeaten with a 70-50 win over the Blue Jays.

E-town (6-3, 2-1 Landmark) struggled from the floor early on, missing its first nine shots. Meredith Holley had the first point of the game for EC, splitting a pair at the free throw line. Rachel Forjan hit the Jays' first shot with a jumper to cut the deficit to 6-3.

Scranton (12-0, 3-0 Landmark) had a clear height advantage and they looked to exploit that. Alexix Roman, the conference's leading scorer, had a couple early buckets down low, but the Elizabethtown defense did a good job collapsing on the forward to force her into some tough shot attempts. Ten of the Royals' first 13 points came in the paint.

Down nine, the Blue Jays were able to escape Scranton's full court press. Forjan found Jenny Welch down the left wing. Welch dribbled back toward the three-point line and found a trailing Marissa Gingrich, unguarded. Gingrich stepped into a trey and swished it to make it 15-9. E-town trailed 17-11 after the first quarter.

The shooting woes continued, but the Jays' defense kept the game within reach. E-town forced Scranton into nine first-half turnovers.

After a three-point miss by Noelle Alicea, Alyssa Aichele grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the floor. The possession results in a Holley lay-in as the sophomore squared up at the left elbow, brought the defender to her, and dribbled past for the bucket.

Elizabethtown held the Royals scoreless for over a four-minute stretch in the second quarter until Jaclyn Gantz sank a trey to push Scranton's lead to 26-17. On the next possession, Aichele answered with a three of her own as the Blue Jays were back within six, 26-20, with 2:26 left in the first half.

Sarah Payonk stretched the lead to double digits for the first time in the game with a pair of free throws with less than a minute to go. Gantz then sank another three-pointer with two ticks on the clock as the hosts went into the locker room up 33-21.

Forjan tried to keep Elizabethtown close, scoring seven of the team's 11 points in a decisive third quarter. Scranton held the Jays without a point over five minutes between Forjan field goals and took a commanding 58-32 lead by the end of it. Forjan had a team-high 17 points in the game.

The defense produced the first points of the fourth quarter as Welch got her hands on an errant pass. She dished to Forjan, who tooks a few dribbles toward the basket as her and Welch created the two-on-one. Forjan bounce passed the rock back over to a cutting Welch and she converted the fast break layup.

Leah Gamber, seeing a season-high in minutes, scored her first collegiate basket for Elizabethtown in the fourth quarter off a pass from Welch.

Roman was held to just seven points, the first time this season the forward hasn't reached double digits. Payonk had a game-high 18 points and 11 boards for the Royals. Gingrich joined Forjan in double figures with 11 points. Aichele and Holley each had seven rebounds apiece.

The road doesn't get any easier for Elizabethtown when they host Catholic at Thompson Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 5 at 7 p.m.
