Jays take care of business at USMMA, win third straight

KING'S POINT, N.Y. — Rachel Forjan set a new career-high in points for the second consecutive game and helped the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team sweep the season series with Merchant Marine for the second straight season after the Blue Jays cruised to a 76-58 victory Monday afternoon. Forjan finished the game with 30 points to lead all scorers.

Forjan, fresh off a 29-point performance in Saturday's win over Goucher, accounted for the first 11 Elizabethtown (10-5, 6-3 Landmark) points. She hit a layup to start the game, followed by a jumper to make it 4-0 in the first minute of play. She assisted on Abby Beyer's fastbreak layup before hitting two free throws and capping off E-town's 11-2 start with her first of four treys in the game.

The Jays were up by as many as 22 in the first quarter and went into the second up 26-7.

Merchant Marine (6-10, 1-7 Landmark) went nearly half of the second quarter scoreless until Jenna Wetherington broke the drought with an and-one. By that point, E-town was up 32-10.

Wetherington's jumper helped spark a bit of a Mariner run to close out the first half as they outscored Elizabethtown 16-9 going into the break. Forjan had 18 first-half points and the Blue Jays led 41-23 at halftime.

Known for coming out of locker room hot, E-town lit up the scoreboard once more in the third quarter. The Jays were good on eight of their first nine shots. Forjan drained two straight three-pointers, Beyer connected on a three of her own, Alyssa Aichele found Emily Martin down low for the lay-in and then hit two straight jumpers of her own, Forjan had a driving left-handed layup, and Marissa Gingrich hit the Jays' fourth three of the quarter. After all that, EC was up comfortably, 63-37.

The Mariners outscored E-town 18-10 in the fourth quarter, but the hole was already too deep for USMMA to get out of and the Jays finished off their third straight win.

Forjan shot 12-for-18 from the floor, including 4-for-6 from downtown. Martin finished two boards shy of another double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Beyer and Aichele had nine points apiece. As a team, EC went 28-for-58 (48.3%).

For the women's basketball team, it is the sixth straight 10-plus win season.

Elizabethtown will have the rest of the week off before traveling to face Susquehanna on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m.
