Women's basketball smothers Goucher, Forjan sets career high

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Rachel Forjan kept her torrid scoring stretch going with a career-high 29 points in the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team's 66-44 win over Goucher in Landmark Conference play Saturday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. Forjan's game-high 29 came on ten made field goals, including six treys. Emily Martin registered double-double No. 9 with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Forjan hit a three for the first points of the game 41 seconds into the game and Elizabethtown (9-5, 5-3 Landmark) never relinquished the lead from there on out. The Jays' defense suffocated Goucher's (5-11, 0-7 Landmark) guards and the Gophers were held without a field goal over the first 6:14 of the game.

A little over a third of Forjan's point total came in the first quarter where she scored ten of E-town's 18 points. The Blue Jays were up 18-4 at the end of the first. Goucher shot just 1-for-13 in the first ten minutes.

Another seven points from Forjan in the second had Elizabethtown well on its way to its second straight win at the Thomp. The senior, who had her third straight 20-plus point game, almost outscored Goucher for the second straight quarter singlehandedly. She had 17 at the half as E-town led 32-12.

11 of Martin's 17 points came in the second half as she began to assert herself on the offensive end. The junior double-double machine was efficient from the floor, shooting 5-for-7 over the final two quarters and grabbed seven of her 11 boards over the final 20 minutes.

Alyssa Aichele drew the assignment of guarding Goucher's most effective scorer, Briana Bull. Coming into the game averaging a tad over 17 points per game, Aichele and the Blue Jays' defense held the second leading scorer in the Landmark Conference to five points on 2-for-14 shooting. India Perkins led the Gophers with 11 points.

Forjan got her career-high on a made three, her sixth of the game, with 3:11 left in regulation. It was the second of back-to-back treys for the York native, both assisted by Emma Hoesman.

The women's basketball team will head to Kings Point, N.Y. on Monday, Jan. 18 to take on Merchant Marine at 4 p.m.
