Trama, Blue Jays sweep Alumni Challenge

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — For the second straight year, Zach Trama was the first to cross the finish line for the Elizabethtown College men's cross country team. Also for the second straight year, the men's team won its home meet, the Blue Jay Alumni Challenge. This year's meet featured a double dual meet scoring system, where the Jays beat Gwynedd Mercy 15-50 and its alumni team 16-46.

Trama, a senior, was Elizabethtown's top runner for the second straight meet. On Saturday, he finished his 6k on the campus loop in 20:50.51, seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Matt Shenk, who was right behind Trama last week at Shippensburg. Shenk ran 20:57.62.

Adam Harriger and Sam Cooper gave E-town the top four places as the seniors were third and fourth, respectively. Harriger ran 21:08.50 while Cooper crossed in 21:29.63. Eric Reichert, the 2011 individual MAC champion and four-time all-region, was fifth.

Keegan McDonough placed sixth in 21:42.31, Sam Brooks was seventh in 21:58.88, and Andrew Lesko was ninth in 22:15.17 as the Jays had seven in the top ten.

Matt Rever finished eighth for the alums, while Jeremy Matula was tenth.

Joining the race was a member of the program's first-ever conference championship team in 1965. Bill Doherty, a two-time all-conference runner, finished 28th in 31:26.79 on the 50th anniversary of the team's conference title.

The men's cross country team will have a two-week break before its next meet. The Blue Jays will compete at the Dickinson Long-Short Course Invitational on Saturday, September 26.
