Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Jays falter in second half, lose first of the season

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — It was a promising first half for the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team in Monday afternoon's matchup against Lycoming. The Jays led 7-5 at the break after a slow start to the game, but a big second half from Lycoming gave the Warriors a 16-9 victory, sending E-town to its first loss of the season.

The pressure was on Michelle Fuller and the Elizabethtown (2-1) defense in the first five minutes of the non-conference matchup. The Jays had trouble clearing their own zone, coughing up four turnovers. Fuller had to make two saves on free position attempts as E-town looked to find its rhythm.

Lycoming (3-0) finally capitalized on a Blue Jays' mistake as Jenna Hudson scored the game's first goal with 26:09 left in the first half. Just over a minute later, Warriors' leading goal scorer Meghenn Jackson scored her 14th of the season to make it 2-0.

Katie Thompson brought momentum back to Elizabethtown's side not long after Jackson scored for Lycoming. Thompson recorded her first career goal on a free position attempt, beating Nicole Gerling. Thompson's goal ended up being the first of five in a row as the Jays began to assert themselves.

Kirstin Quilty forced a turnover which gave possession back to E-town. They cleared successfully and that led to Addie Stang's first goal of the game and team-leading 12th of the season to tie it 2-2. 43 seconds later, Stang assisted on Mary Nell Donahue's first of three goals.

Carly Thompson and Addie Stang were winning the draw controls, allowing Elizabethtown to attack repeatedly and the Jays were cashing in. Megan DeMichele and Donahue scored the fourth and fifth goals for EC, respectively, to put them up 5-2.

The Blue Jays looked poised for another big half and extend its winning streak to start the season to three straight, but Lycoming came out a different looking team in the final 30 minutes and took it to the blue and gray.

After outshooting the Warriors in the first half, Lyco ramped up the pressure offensively and sustained it for much of the second half. They outshot E-town 18-10 in the final 30 minutes.

The two-goal lead vanished in the first five minutes as Jackson and Erin Cieniewicz helped Lycoming knot the game at 7-7. Midway through the second half, the Warriors had an 11-7 lead.

Lyco began winning more draw controls and didn't allow Elizabethtown to get in sync on the attacking end. Gerling faced nine second-half shots from the Jays and made seven saves, including three on free position attempts. Gerling had nine saves in the game. Fuller made six saves for the Blue Jays.

Stang and Donahue had E-town's second-half goals.

The women's lacrosse team heads out for its first road game, traveling to face Neumann on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
