Baseball drops series finale at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Luke Gatti's RBI single in the top of the seven gave Elizabethtown a 4-3 lead, but just as quickly, Moravian answered with three in the bottom of the inning to complete a Landmark Conference series sweep, 6-4, Monday afternoon at Gillespie Field.

Gatti and Sean Jones each knocked in a run in the top of the first as the Blue Jays (11-7, 2-4 Landmark) grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but the hosts got one in the first and two in the fourth against E-town starter Zack Tomasko to lead 3-2 heading to the seventh.

Needing a rally after being held to just a Frank Canuso single and Parke Martin double between the third and sixth innings, the Jays used some two-out magic to take the lead.

A Weary rocket took a big hop and popped into left field scoring Kyle Fackler to tie the game at three. The next batter, Gatti, pushed a ball between first and second as Weary hustled around to beat the throw of Matt Hanson for a 4-3 E-town lead.

Moravian (8-6, 4-5 Landmark) turned around and immediately clawed its way back. Second baseman Alex Longernecker led off with a single and moved to second on Anthony Gaetaniello's sacrifice bunt.

Runners occupied first and third for the Greyhounds after one of Colin Case's three hits, prompting coach Cliff Smith to turn to lefty Josh Sollenberger out of the pen. The Jays were caught off guard when Hanson laid down a punt right in front of the plate and Longerberger raced home to knot the game at four.

Sollenberger struck out yesterday's game one hero Charles Savite, but with two outs and Taras Letnaunchyn now on the hill, Justin Pilchman lined the first pitch he saw to center to bring in two more Moravian runs.

Elizabethtown got the benefit of a two-out error in the ninth, but couldn't turn it into runs against Greyhound reliever Brett Wagner, who went 2.1 innings for the win.

Tomasko suffered his second loss of the year with nine hits and five runs (three earned) allowed over 6.1 innings. He struck out three.

Fackler walked twice and scored twice for the Blue Jays, while Weary also scored two runs. Moravian outhit E-town 12-8 and the Jays left 10 on base.

E-town must regroup and get ready for six critical league games over the next five days. They'll host Scranton in the series opener between the two teams Wednesday at 4 p.m. That will be followed by a doubleheader Thursday and three games against Juniata Friday and Saturday.
