Gatti goes 5-for-5 in wild 22-13 loss to Scranton

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Hitters will want to remember this game forever, pitchers will want to forget it immediately. Scranton and Elizabethtown combined for 35 runs and 42 hits Wednesday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. Luke Gatti was 5-for-5 for the Blue Jays, but the Royals prevailed 22-13 in an affair that tied for the highest scoring game in Landmark Conference history.

Gatti's five-hit effort was a career-best and Elizabethtown's (11-8, 2-5 Landmark) first five-hit game since Jared Auman's against Lancaster Bible in 2008. The senior first baseman drove in a team-high four runs, including two on a double off the wall in left that put the Jays ahead 6-1 in the bottom of the second.

Things were looking great for the Blue and Gray at that point, but things quickly turned sour as Scranton scored 13 unanswered runs, finishing a three-inning onslaught with 21 runs between the third and fifth.

Michael Umerich was 3-for-6 with six RBIs, leadoff hitter Tommy Trotter added four RBIs on a 3-for-5 afternoon. Both players crossed home three times along with Zach Dignam, Ross Danzig, Brian Healy and Michael Ratner.

Elizabethtown hit the ball hard, too. Sean Jones had three hits in six at-bats and drove home two. Nick Lorenz cracked his first career home run in the second to give the Jays a 2-1 lead.

But the home side struggled to throw strikes and it came back to bite them. The Blue Jays yielded eight walks to Scranton (7-8, 5-2 Landmark) and when they put the ball over the plate, the Royals took advantage.

Elizabethtown returns to Boyd Stadium tomorrow to finish its series with the Royals. The two teams will play a pair of seven-inning games, with game one slated for 1 p.m.
