Bats fall silent for Blue Jays at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Elizabethtown entered Sunday's Landmark doubleheader at Moravian with one of the top pitching staffs in the conference, and though the Jays got strong outings from Kristopher Davis in game one and Kevin Elwell in game two, the Greyhound hurlers one-upped them. The hosts won game one 3-2 in 10 innings and completed the sweep with a 3-0 shutout.

GAME 1
E-town Starters: 1. Fackler 2b, 2. Holbert cf, 3. Weary 3b, 4. Gatti 1b, 5. Jones rf, 6. Smith dh, 7. Snyder lf, 8. Canuso c, 9. Kibler ss, SP Davis
Moravian Starters: 1. Gaetaniello cf, 2. Case ss, 3. Hanson rf, 4. Savite 1b, 5. Pilchman lf, 6. Luke 3b, 7. Roethke c, 8. Lansberry dh, 9. Longernecker 2b, SP Morrin

Charles Savite's one-out single in the bottom of the 10th gave Moravian the walk-off victory in the early game.

The Blue Jays (11-6, 2-3 Landmark) and Greyhounds played to a 2-2 tie through the scheduled seven innings, and there were only two hits in extras, both off Moravian bats.

Elizabethtown mounted a threat in the top of the ninth when Colby Smith and Parke Martin were both hit by pitches, but Moravian (7-6, 3-5 Landmark) reliever Ian Carbone got out of his own jam by getting Austin Kibler to fly out to right.

Sean Jones issued back-to-back walks to Colin Case and Matt Hanson to start the 10th before Savite put an 0-1 pitch through the 5-6 hole to score Case with the game-winning run.

Kristopher Davis started and went eight innings for the Blue and Gray. While his run of starts with six strikeouts or more came to an end at three, the Doylestown native still posted a very respectable stat line of nine hits allowed, two earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Davis improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio to 30:1 on the year.

Alex Holbert led the offense with two hits, but E-town was limited to three for the game and scored both of its runs on a third-inning error.

Moravian's Dan Morrin struck out four over 7.2 innings, allowing just the two unearned runs. He did not factor into the decision. Hunter Guard pitched a perfect top of the 10th for his first win of the season.

GAME 2
E-town Starters: 1. Fackler 2b, 2. Holbert cf, 3. Weary 3b, 4. Gatti 1b, 5. Jones rf, 6. Smith dh, 7. Manning lf, 8. Ragozzino c, 9. Kibler ss, SP Elwell
Moravian Starters: 1. Gaetaniello cf, 2. Case ss, 3. Hanson rf, 4. Savite 1b, 5. Pilchman lf, 6. Luke 3b, 7. Leon dh, 8. Runne c, 9. Longernecker 2b, SP Kahn

Greyhound starter Ryan Kahn outdueled Kevin Elwell in a back-and-forth that saw both pitchers go the distance.

Kahn fanned eight and gave up a mere three hits over seven innings. He got all the offensive support needed in the second and third innings.

Ryan Luke's RBI single back through the box scored Savite to put Moravian up 1-0 in the bottom of the second. Case would provide an RBI groundout and Hanson a run-scoring single in the third to bump the hosts lead to 3-0.

E-town simply couldn't solve Kahn, going down in order in the first, third, fifth and seventh frames. The Jays never got a runner past second base, but stranded runners at first and second in the top of the sixth.

Holbert, Luke Gatti and Jones each had a hit for Elizabethtown. Elwell scattered five hits and only one of the three runs by the Hounds was charged to the sophomore. He walked three and struck out one in falling to 1-3 on the season.
