Big first half sets tone in Blue Jays win over Merchant Marine

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — It had been nearly three weeks since the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team tasted victory. The Blue Jays were able to snap a three-game winless streak Saturday with a 17-3 win over Merchant Marine in Landmark Conference action. Seven different players scored, led by five goals from Dana Robidoux.

Becky Graessle controlled the opening draw, giving Elizabethtown (4-5, 1-1 Landmark) possession in its offensive end to start the game. Robidoux took a shot that was blocked down by a defender, but picked up by Cierra Eckenrode. The ball made its way to leading goal scorer Addie Stang, who put the back into the back of the net for the game's opening score less than a minute in.

Eckenrode grabbed the ensuing draw and 17 seconds after scoring her first of the game, Stang tallied her second of four to make it 2-0 on back-to-back shots.

The Jays produced goals on the following four shots as well to run out to a 6-0 lead with 22:52 left in the first half. Carly Thompson scored unassisted, Robidoux used a Stang assist for her first of the game, Kirstin Quilty scored on a free position, and Robidoux got goal No. 2 unassisted to make it 6-0.

E-town made it tough on Merchant Marine (0-4, 0-2 Landmark) on the draws by winning seven of the first ten. By the 14:39 mark of the first half, the Blue Jays had a 10-0 advantage.

Jays' goalie Michelle Fuller kept the Mariners scoreless, stopping a free position attempt with less than ten minutes remaining. USMMA was able to turn E-town over and Madeline Thibeault collected the ground ball on her own caused turnover and took it in unassisted, scoring her team's first goal.

Eckenrode and Stang (two) scored goals to close out the half for Elizabethtown. The Jays led 13-1 at the half.

Thibeault won the opening draw of the second half and scored 13 seconds later to make it 13-2. Emily Finnin recorded her first of the season in the latter stages of the game. E-town was up 15-3 at that point.

Robidoux, Quilty, Molly Hurley, and Adriana Bertolino all scored goals for E-town in the second half en route to the 17-3 final. Robidoux's five goals tied a single-game career high. Stang, the Landmark's leading goal scorer, finished with four goals and three assists, her third seven-point game of the season.

Fuller made three saves before Jessica Battaglia came in with less than five minutes left in the first half. Battaglia also recorded three saves. Their counterpart, Rachel Smith, had 15 saves in the loss.

Elizabethtown outshot USMMA 43-10 overall and were 18-for-20 on clear attempts for the game.

The women's lacrosse team will conclude its four-game homestand on Friday, April 3 when Goucher visits Wolf Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
