Goucher stuns Blue Jays with late 3

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown missed a chance to pad its playoff position, as Alex Noble's 3-pointer with 18 seconds left gave Goucher just its fourth win of the season, 61-57, over the Jays on Senior Day Saturday.

Noble scored 16 points, including the final two free throws with 1.5 seconds to go that sealed the win for Goucher (4-17, 3-9 Landmark).

The Blue Jays (8-13, 6-7) were without senior starter Lee Eckert and key reserve Jake Sweger as they fell for the fourth consecutive game.

Tyler Simpkiss, one of seven seniors honored before the game, did his best to keep the Jays ahead. He scored 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, knocked down four 3-pointers and hauled in nine boards in his final regular season home game.

E-town came out of the gates slow, settling for too many perimeter shots. Goucher scored nine of the first 12 points, going in front 9-3 on Troy DeShields' layup with 15:28 to go.

Simpkiss' trey 3:46 before the half gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the game, 21-19, and they would head to the locker room up by two, 28-26.

Elizabethtown was in front for the first 19 minutes of the second half, leading by as many as nine at one point.

Up 53-45 with 5:18 left, the Blue Jays watched Noble and Tucker Canary can threes to bring Goucher back within two.

Goucher would get the lead on two quick buckets by Brian Morton II. Morton scored with 1:07 left to cut E-town's lead to 55-54, then stole the inbounds pass and laid it in for a 56-55 visitors' lead.

Josh Eden answered with a baby hook at the other end to briefly put E-town back in front, but Noble stepped into his game-winning shot with full confidence. He scored 13 of his 16 after the break.

Eden had 12 points for the Jays and Evan Hathaway 10. Tommy James grabbed seven rebounds and scored four points in 18 minutes off the bench.

Chris Outing totaled a game-high 14 rebounds for the Gophers. He also had nine points and two blocks. Canary was 3-of-6 from downtown for 11 points and Jesse Mondry scored 10 off the bench.

Elizabethtown remained a game up for the final Landmark Conference tournament spot, as the two teams chasing them: Drew and Juniata, both lost Saturday.

E-town will finish the regular season with three straight road games, starting next Saturday at Moravian.
