BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Elizabethtown men's basketball was dealt another excruciating loss Saturday. The Blue Jays turned the ball over twice in the final 10 seconds and Moravian's Izel Dickerson drove into the lane for the game-winning layup with 4.6 seconds left, as the Greyhounds pulled out a 61-60 victory in Johnston Hall.
The final Landmark Conference Championships spot has been ripe for the taking for what seems like the last two weeks –maybe more. Yet, none of the three teams with a shot to snare it have done anything about it.
E-town (8-14, 6-8 Landmark) dropped its fifth straight game, but held onto a half-game lead over Drew –which lost for the fifth time in its last six games– and a one-game advantage over Juniata. The Jays travel to Drew Wednesday night for what is essentially a play-in game.
Tyler Simpkiss dropped a game-high 20 points for E-town, shooting 8-of-13. Simpkiss had 13 at the break on 5-of-6 shooting.
Evan Hathaway took up the scoring in the second half, recording nine of his season-high 13 points.
Josh Eden produced 12 points and eight boards for the blue and gray.
Elizabethtown led 33-31 at halftime and though the Greyhounds (5-18, 3-11 Landmark) built a seven-point edge late in the second half, the Blue Jays were able to get back in the game.
Back-to-back layups by Hathaway, along with jumpers from
Joe Bodnar and Eden cut the Moravian lead to one, 59-58 with 3:38 to go.
Only two buckets would fall during the remainder of the game. The first, a layup from
Tommy James with 1:39 to play, gave Elizabethtown a 60-59 lead. The second, Dickerson's game-winner, came with 4.6 to go.
Moravian turned the ball over twice in the final 1:25, but the Blue Jays handed the ball right back both times.
With 9.5 to go, E-town was unable to get the ball in and threw a desperation pass into the front court to avoid a 5-second call, that the Hounds turned into Dickerson's go-ahead layup. Extra time ran off the clock after the basket, prompting the officials to reset the clock –a benefit to the Jays, who were without a timeout.
Moravian's defensive pressure again forced an errant inbounds pass, however, as the Blue Jays never got a shot at the win.
Dickerson finished with a team-high 18 for Moravian. Brandon McGuire dominated the boards with 16 and also had 13 points for the double-double. Riley Hengler came off the bench to chip in with seven.
Juniata, which fell to Merchant Marine Saturday, remained mathematically alive with E-town and Drew both losing. The Eagles must upset conference unbeaten and nationally-ranked Catholic Wednesday to stay alive. If they don't, the winner of E-town/Drew is in the driver's seat for the final spot.
Though a win Wednesday would clinch a playoff spot for the Blue Jays, they would not be eliminated with a loss. A loss would split the season series with Drew 1-1, but the Rangers' regular season would be over. The Jays would then have to win at Susquehanna next Saturday. An upset over the Crusaders (third in the Landmark) would give E-town the final spot on the second tiebreaker (head-to-head versus the conference's top teams). Neither E-town nor Drew has beaten No. 1 Catholic or No. 2 Scranton. Drew has already lost to No. 3 Susquehanna twice as well.
Tip-off from Madison, N.J. is set for 7 p.m.
