MADISON, N.J. –
Joe Bodnar's five 3-pointers and game-high 23 points weren't enough to help Elizabethtown clinch a playoff spot. Drew put four starters in double figures to defeat the Blue Jays 79-61 in Landmark Conference action Wednesday night. E-town now faces a must win Saturday at Susquehanna.
Needing a win to secure the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, the Blue Jays got baskets from
Josh Eden and Bodnar within the first two minutes to take an early 5-4 lead. But after Kevin-Michael Miller answered Bodnar's first trey of the night with a layup, the Rangers (12-13, 7-9 Landmark) never trailed again.
Jason Huelbig had 13 first-half points and Kevin Herring II added 11 for Drew, which shot 56% (14-of-25) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Elizabethtown trailed 14-8 with 14:14 to go in the opening half, but got it back to a one-point game, 19-18, by the 10:57 mark.
Tommy James converted a pair of layups and Bodnar two free throws, while
Phil Wenger and
Evan Hathaway each added a basket.
Drew finished the half on an 11-3 run, putting the Jays down 41-29 at the break. The Blue Jays never recovered, facing as much as a 25-point deficit in the second half.
Bodnar wound up hitting seven of his 13 shots and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc for a new season-high in the points column. Back on Nov. 18, the senior guard from Medford, N.J., drained six 3-pointers and scored 22 in a 12-point loss at Lancaster Bible.
Hathaway provided the Jays 10 points and eight boards. Wenger had nine points and three steals before fouling out with 1:03 to go.
Herring's 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting (6-of-11 3FG) led Drew. Huelbig was close behind with 19, followed by 10 each from Ozan Yucetepe and Mike Klinger. Klinger was just 2-of-4 shooting after going 11-of-16 and torching E-town for 33 points in a 97-76 loss for his team at Thompson Gymnasium in mid-January.
The Rangers were strong at the foul line, too, going 17-of-22. They outrebounded the Jays by eight, 38-30.
Elizabethtown only committed nine turnovers, one off its season-low, which happened to come against Drew earlier this season.
Drew's playoff fate now lies in the hands of Susquehanna. If the Blue Jays can steal a win from the Crusaders in their regular season finale Saturday in Selinsgrove, they'll be the No. 4 seed and face Catholic on the road in the Landmark semifinals next Wednesday. If Susquehanna wins, Drew, which is idle Saturday, earns the final spot.
Tip-off at Susquehanna is set for 4 p.m.
