Davis strikes out 15, Blue Jays blank Maritime (N.Y.)

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kristopher Davis set a new career-high with 15 strikeouts and Elizabethtown put up its highest run total in a season opener since 1999, shutting out Maritime (N.Y.) 12-0 Saturday night in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Pitching was expected to be a strong suit of the Blue Jays this season and last year's ace showed that to be true against the Privateers (1-4).

Davis struck out the side in the second and had 11 punch outs on just 73 pitches through five innings. Not known for putting up big strikeout numbers, Davis' previous career-high was six. The senior actually surpassed his entire total of 14 from last season, when he threw four complete games and had a career-best 1.61 earned run average.

The Blue Jays (1-0) struck early, taking advantage of three extra-base hits and a sacrifice fly to grab a 3-0 lead after the first inning. They added one in the second, two in the fourth on a Tyler Weary double, one in the sixth and five in the eighth. E-town's 12 runs were its most in a season opener in the last 16 seasons, going back to a 12-2 victory over Baruch on March 7, 1999.

Elizabethtown ended the night with eight doubles and nine extra-base hits.

Kyle Fackler was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Weary also doubled twice and drove in four runs.

Luke Gatti (2-for-4) and Sean Jones (2-for-3) joined Fackler and Weary with multi-hit efforts. Jones crossed the plate four times.

Davis allowed just five hits, concluding his night after 113 pitches. The Doylestown native would also strike out the side for a second time in the fifth and recorded at two strikeouts or more in five of his eight innings on the bump.

Fellow senior Taras Letnaunchyn got the final four outs and struck out two to complete the shutout. The team's 17 strikeouts and eight doubles were both program bests since 2000.

Elizabethtown led the Commonwealth Conference and ranked 51st in Division III with four shutouts last season.

Maritime, which got to the facility later than expected after falling 26-7 to Misericordia up in Vero Beach earlier in the afternoon, got two hits from Lenny Baldassare. The Privateers used five pitchers to get through the game, but starter Anthony D'Ancona took the loss after allowing four earned runs in two frames.

Saturday night's game, which was scheduled for 7 p.m., started about an hour and a half late.

The Blue Jays continue their spring break trip at 10 a.m. Sunday against No. 24 Misericordia.
