No. 24 Misericordia deals baseball first loss

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – An early lead would not hold up for Elizabethtown Sunday, as 24th-ranked Misericordia used a four-run fourth to drop the Blue Jays, 8-2.

Luke Gatti led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, but the Jays (1-1) were held to just six hits by four Cougar pitchers.

Elizabethtown starter Kevin Elwell worked out of trouble in the bottom of the first when he got Mike Comerford swinging with runners on second and third.

Comerford came through in his next at-bat, however, breaking a 1-1 tie with a two-run shot to left in the third that put the Cougars (2-0) ahead for good.

Two-out RBI doubles from Miles Westrich and Chris Boroch added to Misericordia's lead before the inning was through. The MU lead would grow to 7-1 with two more runs in the fourth, before Gatti's double to right center brought home Kyle Fackler in the top of the fifth.

Gatti had given the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with one out in the first. Fackler hit his third double in two games to lead off the game and was sacrificed to third by Alex Holbert. Gatti then singled to pitcher Tim Burek to score Fackler.

E-town was aiming for its third straight win against a nationally-ranked Misericordia team. The Blue Jays took two from the Cougars during last year's trip to Fort Pierce when they were ranked 21st and 25th.

Burek worked five innings and struck out five for the win. He allowed two earned runs on five hits and walked three. Elliot Forde, Jim Tunison and Garrett Pelko put together four scoreless innings out of the Cougar bullpen.

Elwell left after throwing 83 pitches in three innings and giving up six runs on 11 hits. Josh Kwak went three innings in relief, Richy Masciarelli struck out one in the seventh, and Austin Kibler made his collegiate debut with a flawless eighth.

Elizabethtown, which hit eight doubles Saturday night against Maritime (N.Y.), connected for four more Sunday. Fackler, Gatti, Tyler Weary and Frank Ragozzino each had one against the Cougars.

Kyle Lindsay and D.J. Navoczynski finished with three hits during a 16-hit afternoon for Misericordia. Comerford and Westrich both had two RBIs.

Elizabethtown faces off against former alum Bryan Torresani and his Immaculata Mighty Macs Monday. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 10 a.m.
