Stang leads Blue Jays past Hood

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore Addie Stang scored six goals and picked up nine ground balls as the Elizabethtown women's lacrosse team blanked Hood in the first half and went on to a 15-4 victory in its home and season opener Wednesday afternoon.

Six freshman and seven newcomers started for the Blue Jays, who imposed their will in the first half. Elizabethtown outshot Hood 24-4 and scored seven unanswered goals to open a comfortable lead.

Stang was all over the place, recording three of those first-half goals and an assist. She started the scoring 6:54 in with an unassisted goal, helped out on a Mary Nell Donahue marker at 19:26 and scored twice more in the last 12:36.

Carly Thompson, Dana Robidoux and Kirstin Quilty also scored for E-town (1-0) before the half was through. For Thompson and Quilty, the goals were the first of their careers.

Another freshman, goalie Michelle Fuller, stepped up with four of her five saves before halftime. Twice in the first half Fuller blocked down free position shots from the Blazers.

Hood (0-1) cut into the Jays' lead early in the second half, scoring on its first two shots. Derian Le and Jade Locklear registered unassisted goals on the Blazers' first two shots of the half.

Stang would answer back with the next two goals for Elizabethtown. Robidoux set up the Dover native's fourth of the afternoon at 27:45 and Stang scored unassisted at 23:35 to make it 9-2.

The Blazers would get within five once more, on Le's second of the afternoon, with 16:51 to go, but Elizabethtown scored the final six goals. Adriana Bertolino and Cierra Eckenrode netted a pair of goals, and Molly Hurley also tallied.

Elizabethtown controlled every phase of the game, and though the Blazers worked without the benefit of any reserves, the Blue Jays looked much improved under second-year coach Danielle Seling.

Freshman Katie Thompson forced a game-high five turnovers and snared eight ground balls, second most on the team behind Stang's nine. Sister Carly Thompson added five ground balls and a team-high three draw controls. Carly also had a goal and an assist on nine shots.

The Blue Jays held a lopsided 50-11 shot advantage, while committing 18 less turnovers than the Blazers. The home side was good on 13-of-16 clears and won 13-of-21 draws.

Hood goalie Lauren Couch made 19 saves and picked up seven ground balls.

E-town continues a three-game homestand a week from Saturday against Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m.
