ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Emily Martin nearly finished with as many rebounds herself as Drew did as a team Wednesday evening at Thompson Gymnasium. The sophomore center set multiple new career-highs as the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team locked up a playoff berth, the fourth straight season the team has advanced to the postseason and first in the Landmark Conference. The Blue Jays handled the Rangers 65-51. Martin,
Rachel Forjan, and
Taylor Alwine all reached double figures.
Apart from the tie at 2-2, Elizabethtown (17-6, 10-5 Landmark) led the entire way. By the 13:19 mark of the first half, E-town's lead was already up to 13 after Alwine dished to Martin for the layup. Drew (12-13, 6-10 Landmark) began the game 2-for-9 from the floor.
The Rangers did go on a 13-6 run over the next five minutes to cut the deficit to six, 23-17, on Courtney Trzasko's three-pointer. Forjan quickly sent the lead back into double digits with a fast-break layup and made jumper.
Martin proved too much to handle for Drew in and around the painted area. 18 of her team-high 23 points came in the first half as the Lancaster Catholic product started her night 5-for-5 from the field. She had a double-double by the end of the half, grabbing her tenth rebound of the game (all defensive) with four seconds left. E-town led 43-27 at the break.
Defensively, Martin added a career-best six steals. She caused a turnover early on in the second half and found
Alyssa Aichele on the opposite block for an uncontested lay-in. The Jays ran their advantage to 20 when Alwine hit a cutting Pennell for an easy two points.
Hannah Miller was able to lob a pass over a Blue Jay defender, giving Courtney Stephens an open look at the basket. 13 of her game-high 27 came in the second half and her shot brought Drew within 13 at 60-47. The Rangers struggled from the field in the second half, shooting under 30 percent (9-for-31). It seemed like all of those missed shots were falling into the hands of Martin, who registered 15 of her career-high 25 boards in the final 20 minutes. She also had six blocks.
Forjan was efficient on the night, shooting 6-for-12 (1-3 3P) and a perfect 5-for-5 at the foul line to end up with 19 points. Alwine also hit half of her shots en route to 11 points (4-for-8). Stephens was the only Rangers player in double digits. She was 12-for-20.
With the playoff spot clinched, Elizabethtown will now play for seeding this coming Saturday at Susquehanna. Both teams are 10-5 and a game behind Cathlic for second. No. 14 Scranton has already wrapped up the top seed in the conference tournament. An E-town win would give the Blue Jays the third seed. A loss would mean a second trip to Scranton in the Landmark semifinals next week. Saturday's game at Susquehanna is a 2 p.m. start.
