Blue Jays roll into postseason with win over Crusaders

SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Having already locked up a playoff berth this past Wednesday, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team was playing for seeding in the Landmark Conference tournament Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna. The Blue Jays took care of business against the Crusaders, cruising to a 74-60 win to clinch the third seed. E-town led the entire way and spent 36:17 with the lead in double digits.

It was less than three weeks ago that Elizabethtown (18-6, 11-5 Landmark) was on the outside looking in in terms of the playoff picture, but the Jays finished the regular season strong by winning its final five conference games to leapfrog Susquehanna (17-8, 10-6 Landmark) and Moravian, who had been in front.

It took 3:43 for E-town to get out to a 10-0 lead with four of the five starters getting baskets. Taylor Alwine's jumper made it 6-0, forcing Susquehanna into a timeout. The Crusaders had five turnovers in the first few minutes that aided the Jays' tenacious start. Krissy Pennell assisted on three of the first five buckets.

Nikki Komara finally got SU on the board with 15:17 on the clock as her team started just 1-for-5.

Elizabethtown's quick start offensively didn't let down over the course of the first half as they hit 13 of their first 20 shots. Rachel Forjan dropped her first trey of the game with a little over six minutes left in the first half that gave EC its largest lead of the game to that point, 29-9.

Forjan, Alwine, and Emily Martin shot a collective 11-for-16 in the first half and combined for 24 of E-town's 38 points. The blue and gray also outrebounded Susquehanna 16-7 and only allowed the Crusaders one offensive board. They led 38-22 at the break.

Susquehanna chipped away at the deficit in the second half, getting as close as 14 down on a few occasions, but Elizabethtown continued its efficient shooting over the final 20 minutes to keep the Crusaders at bay. E-town shot a season-best 54 percent (27-for-50).

Martin, who had 11 points and 12 rebounds in the first meeting and coming off a career-best 23 and 25 this past Wednesday, came away with a second straight double-double effort of 14 points and 12 boards. Forjan led all scorers with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Alwine added 14 while Pennell had eight points and eight assists.

The women's basketball team will face second-seeded Catholic on the road this coming Wednesday, February 25 at a time to be announced. The team's split their season series with the home team winning each game.
