Several Blue Jays peak at Landmark Championships

BOYDS, Md. – Every swimmer or relay team that competed for the Elizabethtown men's swim team Friday on the opening day of the Landmark Conference Championships set a season-best time.

Sophomore Kieran Koehler broke into the 23-second range in the 50-yard freestyle for the first time in 2014-15 with a 23.21 in the morning's preliminary heats. Koehler finished 24th in the event, just missing his a new career-best by one-tenth of a second. Freshman teammate David Foery was right behind him in 25th with a new personal best of 23.34.

Also swimming season-bests for the Jays in the 50 free were freshman Clayton Leab (24.61), sophomore Ethan Weber (27.19) and junior Conner Land (27.72).

Distance leader Frank Capria got off to a strong start in his 500 freestyle prelim and wound up posting the 24th fastest time with a 5:06.26. Capria shaved 11.65 seconds off his former season-best of 5:17.91. Jake Stonecipher showed a 19 second improvement in the 500 free, coming home in 5:31.23.

In the men's 200 free relay, Koehler, Leab, Capria and Foery put down a team-best 1:34.56 on the season. Capria, Koehler and Foery joined with Stonecipher to clock a 3:53.83 in the evening's final event, the 400 medley relay.

Elizabethtown trails Drew by four points after the first day of competition. Seven-time defending champion Merchant Marine appears headed for another title after winning all but two events and opening up a monumental 170 point lead. The Mariners' 311 points top Susquehanna (141), Catholic (133.5) and Marywood (129) in the top four.

The Blue Jays return to the Germantown Indoor Swim Center for day two of the three-day meet Saturday at 10 a.m. Tomorrow's morning session begins with the 400 individual medley.
