Forjan lights up Juniata, Blue Jays prevail 66-47

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Senior guard Rachel Forjan came into Wednesday night's Landmark Conference opener against Juniata needing just 31 points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. Forjan nearly made it happen, busting loose for 23 points and helping Elizabethtown to a 66-47 win over the Eagles. Emily Martin added another double-double with 18 and 11.

Forjan got off to a hot start, canning four of her first six jumpers, including two treys, in the opener quarter. The senior outscored Juniata (2-3, 0-1 Landmark) on her own, 10-9. Elizabethtown (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) led 21-9 after the first ten minutes of play.

She kept the offense in gear, going off for 11 points in the second quarter on another 4-for-6 effort. Forjan also completed a four-point play after being fouled on a made three-point shot.

As a unit, the Blue Jays made over 50 percent of their first-half shot attempts, going 16-of-31 from the floor and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. E-town had a commanding 42-20 lead at halftime.

Juniata cut into the deficit with a 15-9 run in the third quarter and went into the fourth down 51-35, but the Jays' big first half was too much to overcome. The Eagles had it down to a 14-point game but that is the closest they would get after Bethany Spencer connected on a pair of free throws with 5:58 left in the final period.

The advantage back up to 20 after Emma Hoesman came up with a steal and assisted on Martin's layup with 3:01 remaining. Marissa Gingrich sank both free throw attempts as the Blue Jays had their largest at 24, 66-42, with 1:33 to go.

Martin's double-double was her fourth in six games, sinking six of 13 shots. She grabbed eight defensive boards and snagged another three off the offensive glass. Martin added three assists and two steals in 32 minutes. Gingrich was the third E-town player in double figures with ten. Alyssa Aichele had a team-high five steals and as Elizabethtown defense forced 26 turnovers, a season-best.

The women's basketball team will have ten days off before hosting Merchant Marine on Saturday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.
