Forjan hits 1,000, Blue Jays shake off sluggish start in win over USMMA

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team remained undefeated in Landmark Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 56-36 win over Merchant Marine. In the process, Rachel Forjan became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 points for her career in the second half. Abby Beyer and Marissa Gingrich shared the team lead with 13 points apiece.

Elizabethtown (5-2, 2-0 Landmark) struggled out of the gate and found itself down 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. E-town made just 2 of 14 shot attempts in the opening period of play.

Merchant Marine (4-3, 0-3 Landmark) stretched its lead to as many as nine (17-8) in the second quarter with 7:32 to go, the largest lead the Mariners would get on the Blue Jays. After Emma Hoesman made two free throws, Alyssa Aichele came up with one of her game-high nine steals, leading to a fast-break layup for Marissa Gingrich. A minute later, Gingrich assisted on Aichele's jumper that brought the Jays within three at 17-14. The Mariners led at the break, 21-18.

USMMA made it tough for Forjan, Elizabethtown's leading scorer, to get any open shots. The senior guard had just three points at half, five away from the milestone.

E-town turned it around in the second half, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and making half of its three-point attempts. The Blue Jay defense ramped up its pressure too, holding Merchant Marine to eight points in third and seven in the fourth. The hosts outscored the Mariners 20-8 in the third to take control of the game and outscored the visitors 38-15 in the second half.

Forjan's moment came on EC's first possession of the fourth quarter. With the shot clock winding out toward zero and the ball in her hands, Forjan shook off her defender to create space for a jump shot that beat the buzzer and swished through the net to give the York, Pa. native her 1,000 points. She finished with eight points in the game.

Forjan and Martin, the top two point producers, were held to a combined 13 points. Beyer and Gingrich picked up the slack for E-town, both contributing 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting each. Beyer hit two of three shots from deep and Gingrich went 3-for-4 at the foul line. Aichele was a point and a steal away from a double-double.

Elizabethtown forced 28 turnovers and converted those into 25 points off. USMMA controlled the paint with 20 points in the paint and 22 second-chance points. The Mariners won the rebounding battle, 52-39.

The Blue Jays turn right back around with a non-conference game tomorrow at McDaniel. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
