Blue Jays hand McDaniel first home loss

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Emily Martin recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 16 rebounds and Elizabethtown outscored McDaniel 21-16 in the fourth quarter to send the Green Terror to their first loss at the Gill Center this season, 59-53, Sunday afternoon.

Martin helped the Blue Jays expand on a 26-24 halftime lead with eight consecutive points to open the third. The junior center had 12 points in the third and fourth quarters to go along with seven boards and two blocks, but was charged with her fifth foul with 2:17 to play.

E-town (6-2) made a number of huge defensive plays down the stretch to secure the win.

Abby Beyer took a charge in the middle of the lane with 3:38 remaining, Rachel Forjan blocked a Brittney Davis layup attempt from behind in the final minute and the Jays routinely forced McDaniel into hurried shots late in the shot clock.

Beyer had another fine game offensively going 5-of-8 for 13 points, matching a career-high she set yesterday against Merchant Marine. The rookie from Collegeville led E-town with eight points in the first half and converted a four-point play.

Sunday's game was up for grabs entering the fourth quarter. The Green Terror (7-2) took a 42-40 lead –only their second lead of the second half– on a Karli Zeps jumper with 8:15 to go in the fourth quarter, but Elizabethtown ripped off the next eight points.

Martin scored four points in the run, Alyssa Aichele two and Marissa Gingrich two as the Blue Jays went in front by six, 46-40.

Aichele, ranked 37th in NCAA DIII in steals per game (3.5) coming into the weekend, collected five more, giving her 14 on the weekend and 19 over her last three contests.

Elizabethtown not only clamped down on defense late, but also knocked down its free throws. The Jays were 9-of-12 in the fourth quarter, but made their final six attempts, which all came in the last 36 seconds. Gingrich was 5-of-6 at the charity stripe in the fourth.

Forjan had seven points and a game-high six assists for the Blue and Gray, while Aichele added six points and five boards to her five-steal performance. Sophomore Emma Hoesman scored five points and totaled four of E-town's 13 steals.

The Blue Jays have 93 steals on the season and have 13 or more in each of their last three games.

Elizabethtown will next hit the court in 2016, returning to Landmark Conference play with a road game at nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, Jan. 2.
