Field hockey advances to Landmark Championship game

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team needed some late-game magic four days ago to come back and beat Scranton, but that was not the case in Wednesday's Landmark Conference semifinal game at Wolf Field against the very same Royals team. A year after falling on home turf in a conference semi, E-town controlled much of the play and scored twice in the first half as the Jays shut out Scranton 2-0 to advance to Saturday's title game.

Elizabethtown (10-6) clinched the top seed with the win over Scranton this past Saturday and earned home field. The Blue Jays played like the No. 1 seed from the get-go, pinning Scranton (13-5) back in its own half through the first 20 minutes.

The Royals' stingy defense kept E-town off the scoreboard as they weathered the storm.

Allison McLamb put the hosts ahead as E-town capitalized on one of its penalty corners. Addie Stang swung the ball to McLamb who fired a shot that found the back of the cage for her fifth of the season.

The Jays earned another corner in the final ten seconds of the half and converted to double the lead. Jacki Hikes inserted the ball and Megan Eppley fired off two shots, both of which were saved by Scranton goalie Christina Black. The second save bounced left toward Hikes, who was stationed near the left post. The senior took a few stabs at the ball and was able to get it past the goalie for her 13th of the year and send E-town into the break ahead by two.

Scranton was able to sustain more pressure in the second half, but Stang, Halley Donlin, Renee Grill, Kendra Downey, and Margo Donlin were equal to the task in stopping the Royals.

When it seemed like Scranton had the momentum and could grab a goal to get back into the game, the Elizabethtown defense was there to snuff it out. Donlin made three saves in the game to get the shutout.

The field hockey team will host the winner between No. 2 Juniata and No. 3 Catholic on Saturday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at Wolf Field.
