Catholic rallies past field hockey to win Landmark Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team was one half away from claiming its first Landmark Conference championship Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays scored right before halftime, but saw Catholic pump in two second-half goals to rally past E-town to win the Landmark crown.

Elizabethtown (11-7) played like a team on a mission in the first 35 minutes, putting No. 19 and third-seeded Catholic (13-6) back in its own end for much of the half.

The Cardinals defense withstood the heavy pressure despite being outshot 9-0. Goalie Analisa Scott made all five of her saves in the first half.

As time wound down, Jacki Hikes sent in a cross from the right side that came across the front of the goal. Alyssa Aichele was waiting and batted the ball out of midair and into the cage for the opening goal of the contest, her 19th of the season, to put E-town up 1-0 seconds before intermission.

It was a tale of two halves, however, as Catholic stormed out of halftime and put the pressure back on the Jays. The Cardinals outshot Elizabethtown 13-2 to along with ten second-half penalty corners.

Minutes into the second half, Keira McGovern tied the game after pouncing on a rebound off Marisa Martinelli's initial scoring attempt.

15 minutes later, Catholic took the lead off another penalty corner chance. Rachel day received the insert at the point and fired a shot that was saved by Margo Donlin. The rebound came to Hannah Schied, who pushed the ball toward the goal. Halley Donlin dove across and kept it out with her stick, but Schied's second attempt could not be saved to put the Cardinals up 2-1.

E-town came on the attack late in the game with multiple penalty corners in the final two minutes, but couldn't find the game-tying goal. One final chance off a penalty corner came as time expired, but the shot went wide, ending the Jays' bid to force overtime.

The field hockey team will await the results of tomorrow's NCAA Division III selection show to see if the Blue Jays receive an at-large berth into the tournament.
