Martin named All-Tournament, Blue Jays fall to Albright in championship game

LANCASTER, Pa. — A day after dominating Franklin and Marshall, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had its hands full with Albright in Sunday's Terry Greene Memorial Tournament championship. The Lions were up by double digits after the first quarter and cruised to a 79-59 tournament victory over E-town. Emily Martin led the Blue Jays with 20 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Elizabethtown's (3-2) first possession of the game resulted in a good jumper by Alyssa Aichele, assisted by Martin, to put E-town ahead 2-0. Rachel Forjan sank a shot from the floor to put the Jays back ahead after Albright's Nina Mazzarelli connected on a trey. E-town led for a total of 1:02 in the first quarter, but Mazzarelli hit a second consecutive three to put the Lions back in front 6-4, it was the last time the Jays saw the lead. Albright outscored EC 33-11 in the first quarter to jump out to a commanding lead.

The Blue Jays were held to eight made field goals in the first half, compared to 20 (of 36) for the Lions. Martin had five at the break, as did Forjan. E-town trailed 49-21.

Elizabethtown managed to outscore Albright in the second half, but the hole was already too deep.

Martin had an effective second half, pouring in 15 of her team-high 20 for her second consecutive 20-point outing. She finished 7-of-14 from the floor and went 6-of-7 from the foul line and is now averaging 15.2 on the season.

The big difference in the game was the points in the paint. Albright controlled the lane with 48 points in the paint and 12 offensive boards. E-town had 16 points in the paint and turned the ball over 22 times. Four of Albright's five starters were also in double figures.

Joining Martin on the all-tournament team were MVP Kelecia Harris (Albright), Anajha Burnett (F&M), Jackie Clifford (Washington & Lee), and Nina Mazzarelli (Albright).

The women's basketball team will have the rest of November off before conference play begins with a home game against visiting Juniata on Wednesday, December 2 at 7 p.m.
