Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth quarter run shoots women's basketball past Haverford

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team came back a day after its opening season loss to Marymount (Va.) to come from behind and beat Haverford 47-43 Sunday afternoon at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays trailed at the half, but outscored the Fords by ten over the final two quarters to secure the first win of the season. Rachel Forjan paced E-town with 19 points, while Emily Martin and Alyssa Aichele each had double-doubles.

Forjan hit her first of three treys early in the first quarter for Elizabethtown (1-1) to give the Jays a 3-2 lead. Rachel Liszkiewicz split a pair from the line and Martin made good on a layup to make it 6-2. Olivia Walsh and Sierra Berkel helped Haverford (1-1) tie up the game 7-7 with 4:57 to go in the first. The Fords outscored the Jays 8-5 the rest of the quarter.

Haverford stretched its lead to as many as eight in the second quarter, 26-18, after Berkel's layup with 25 seconds before halftime. Marissa Gingrich took a pass from Meredith Holley with eight seconds to go and sank her jumper to cut the lead to six, 26-20, at the break.

Aichele had the unconventional double-double, grabbing ten rebounds to go with 11 steals; the most by an Elizabethtown player since Megan Wolfe had ten on Nov. 30, 2004 against Susquehanna. E-town was down seven, 28-21, but five straight points from Forjan and a second-chance opportunity for Abby Beyer knotted the game up 28-28 over a 1:30 span. Aichele snagged an offensive board and dished it to Beyer for the two-point to tie it. A few possession later, Aichele came up with another theft that led to another Beyer jumper.

Macy Goldbach and Walsh hit back-to-back threes to give Haverford the lead, 34-32, with a little over a minute left in the third. Walsh's layup with 59 seconds left in the quarter gave the Fords a four-point cushion going into the fourth.

Haverford led by as many as five with 4:23 to go in regulation, but that's when E-town made its move. Beyer found Forjan for a three and Emma Hoesman got the assist on Aichele's made jumper that tied the game up for the fifth time at 43-all. Aichele's tenth steal of the contest led to Martin's layup to give the Jays a two-point lead with a minute left.

The Fords had possession for one final chance to force overtime or go for the win, but Beyer came up with a steal that returned possession back to the hosts. Haverford had to foul to stop the clock, and Forjan connected on two foul shots to essentially ice the game, putting E-town up 47-43 with 12 seconds left. Aichele then sealed the game with her 11th steal.

Martin's double-double consisted of 13 points on five of nine shooting to go with her 11 boards. She also added two assists, three steals and a block. Beyer finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

The women's basketball team will head up the road to take on Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
