Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Seniors take charge, field hockey clinches playoff spot in win over Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team had plenty to celebrate Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field. The seniors were honored prior to the game and then took front stage as the Blue Jays routed Drew 7-0. Seniors Jacki Hikes and Alyssa Aichele combined for five of the team's seven goals, while graduate student Hannah Heritage scored the first of her career. Elizabethtown also clinched a spot in the Landmark playoffs for the second straight season.

Despite a heavy advantage in shots, Elizabethtown (9-5, 5-1 Landmark) found goals hard to come by for the first eight minutes. The Jays put four shots on goal but none found the back of the cage as Drew (2-13, 0-6 Landmark) goalie Ryan Callaghan was busy all afternoon.

However, once Hikes opened the scoring in the ninth minute, the offensive production came a little bit easier. Off a Hikes penalty corner, Nicole Leaf took the insert and blistered a shot toward goal. The shot took a slight deflection and popped into the air to Hikes at the left post. As she has done her whole career, Hikes simply tapped the ball into the cage for her first of three on the day.

Allison McLamb was the only team member who wasn't honored Saturday to appear on the goal scoring list. Emma Christman's shot was stopped, but with the ball sitting right near the goal line, McLamb was there to clean it up, poking it into the cage to make it 2-0 E-town 16:08 into the contest.

A few moments later, an infraction was spotted at the Rangers' goal and Elizabethtown was awarded its first of three penalty strokes in the game. Hikes took the stroke, and beat Callaghan to the upper left corner to register her first career penalty stroke goal. It was also her tenth of the season.

With E-town in control, starter Margo Donlin was relieved coming out of halftime by Emily Lindemuth, making her second appearance of the season. Neither goalie for needed to make a save. Lindemuth played 22:09 before Hannah Mack came in to play out the final 12:51 as the trio combined for the shutout for the second time this season.

The Blue Jays didn't tone it down in the second half, coming out looking for more offense and finding it.

E-town had its third penalty stroke of the afternoon at the 44:12 mark, and this time it was Heritage's chance to record her first stroke. The Flourtown, Pa. native went lower left and beat the goalie for her first career goal and the fourth of the game for the Jays.

43 seconds later, Aichele joined the party, taking a pass from Leaf for her 16th of the year. Aichele added her second of the game with a little over ten minutes remaining to put Elizabethtown ahead 6-0.

Hikes' assist on Aichele's second tally put her into a tie for the sixth-most assists (11) in a single season. Hikes then completed her hat trick with less than three minutes to go on Andrea Keady's assist.

It was the third straight game E-town did not allow a goal and have outscored its last three opponents 16-0 in the process.

E-town will host Rowan on Wednesday, October 28 at 4:30 p.m. to complete its home schedule. The Blue Jays can clinch the top seed in the conference next Saturday with a win at Scranton.
