No. 19 Rowan steals away win from field hockey

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College field hockey team had No. 19 Rowan on the ropes deep in the second half, but the Profs broke through twice in the final 1:24 and turned a potential 2-1 loss into a 3-2 road victory Thursday afternoon at Wolf Field.

It was Elizabethtown (9-6) the pressed from the beginning, nearly getting a goal two minutes into the non-conference matchup when Rowan (12-5) defender Marisa Marini had to keep Andrea Keady's shot from going in.

The Blue Jays did open up the scoring at 5:04. Alyssa Aichele sent Emma Christman down the left side of the field. The sophomore eluded one defender and beat the goalie to the left post for her sixth of the season to make it 1-0 E-town.

Soon thereafter, the Profs got rolling. They had the Jays pinned back defensively and the pressure paid off on a penalty corner. Marini inserted the ball to Rachel Galante out top, who fired back toward the left post to Marini for her to collect and score easily to make it 1-1.

Aichele got the assist on Keady's goal minutes later, playing a little one-two out at the top of the circle. Aichele touched the ball into the path of Keady as she streaked down the middle of the circle. Keady was able to push the ball past the oncoming goalie and into the cage to put Elizabethtown back ahead 2-1. The score would remain the same through the half.

Rowan proved why it had recently moved into the top 20 in the country. The E-town defense was under siege for much of the second half, protecting its one-goal lead. The Profs were relentless, earning ten second-half penalty corners and 16 total in the game. They had the Jays bending, but could not break them as four of Margo Donlin's six saves in the game came in the final 35 minutes.

A little over midway through the second half, E-town was able to relieve some of that pressure. Jacki Hikes and Megan Eppley both had chances to push the lead to two, but Carly DeMarco stopped both attempts to keep it 2-1. Marini also had a defensive save off an E-town corner.

With less than two minutes to go, Rowan was still searching for the game-tying goal and finally found it off the stick of one of its top scorers. Off the 15th penalty corner of the game, Johanna James latched onto the ball amid a mad scramble in front of the cage to tie things up at 2-2.

When it seemed like overtime was inevitable, the Profs marched right back down the field, James touched on a cross to Marini at the far post and the senior captain scored her second of the game to put Rowan ahead with 32 seconds left to steal the game from E-town.

The teams finished equal in shots, with 13 apiece. DeMarco had nine saves in goal for Rowan while Donlin had six.

The field hockey team will head up to Scranton to face the Royals on Saturday, October 31. A win for the Blue Jays will give them the top seed and home field advantage in the upcoming Landmark tournament.
