Field hockey clips Juniata behind Aichele's two goals

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The battle between the Elizabethtown College field hockey team and Juniata was what you would have expected from two of the top teams in the conference. After a scoreless first half, Alyssa Aichele put in two second-half goals and the Blue Jays held on to shut out the Eagles 2-0 to send Juniata to its first league loss.

The last time Elizabethtown (8-5, 4-1 Landmark) and Juniata (7-5, 3-1 Landmark) met on Wolf Field was in last season's Landmark Conference semifinal. The Jays had won the regular season matchup, but the Eagles claimed a 2-1 overtime victory and went on to win the conference title.

The Blue Jays did not forget what happened that day, coming out on Homecoming Saturday with something to prove. E-town dominated much of the play, keeping Juniata goalie Kylie Edwards busy.

Elizabethtown had five first-half penalty corners, but couldn't come up with the opening goal of the game. Though, on the other hand, neither could Juniata. Margo Donlin faced three shots in the first half and stopped them all as the game went into the break tied 0-0.

Juniata pressed early in the second half, earning three penalty corners in the span of a minute. Donlin only needed to make one save despite the opportunities for the Eagles and E-town came away unscathed.

The back-and-forth play finally paid off in the Jays' favor as Aichele cashed in her 14th goal of the year with a little less than 20 minutes to go. Aichele took a touch-pass from Jacki Hikes and batted the ball out of midair, about knee-high level, smacking it into the right corner of the cage.

The defending league champs were close to tying the game, but Renee Grill saved the ball from going in at 65:15 to preserve the shutout. Juniata didn't register another shot in the game the final five minutes.

Aichele tacked on her second of the game with seven seconds to go to ensure the victory for the Blue Jays. She attempted to cross the ball at the left post, but the ball ricocheted off the goalie's pads in front of the net and Aichele tapped it home for her 15th.

Elizabethtown finished with 11 shots to Juniata's nine. E-town also had a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The field hockey team will have a week off before hosting Drew on Senior Day, Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m.
